With DS we used Robert Bruce for his newborn shoot. He charges $175 and that includes a 4x6 print of all the pictures (we ended up with around 70). There's a couple in my bio. I was extremely happy with the pictures.
It wasn't a newborn session, but we used Amanda Williams for her 1 year pictures. She was also $175 and included a display folio with 8 proofs and a cd with all the images and the rights to the images. She got some really cute shots. The only thing that I wasn't happy with was it took her almost a month to edit the pictures and then after all that time she really didn't edit too many of the pictures. It was a really small fraction.
I just booked Emily Dowd for this baby's newborn session. I'm really excited to work with her. I know a number of girls have had newborn sessions with her and the pictures turn out amazing. Her sessions are $250 and includes a $100 credit.
Just a word of warning- you probably want to start contacting people soon. I know Emily mentioned it was a good thing I contacted her when I did because she books up about 3-4 months in advance.

I just had my newborn shoot with Emily Dowd yesterday and I cannot wait to see the pictures. She is amazing. We actually booked her for newborn, 6 mo, and 1 yr together so we paid $500 for all 3 sessions total, plus we get a $100 photo credit that we can use toward the purchace of the CD of images (which we did). I believe her newborn only session is $250, but I could be wrong on that since I was interested in multiple sessions. Hopefully I'll have some sneak peeks soon and I can post if you are interested!
Thanks guys! I will definitely have to check out Emily's work and Robert Bruce's too! I'm glad I posted the question. I didn't realize how busy of a time October is too with people wanting to get a jump start on pictures for Christmas cards.
Oh, one more question while I have you guys. Which months do you think it's worth to pay a professional for versus going somewhere like Sears? Some people are saying to not do newborn pictures and to wait for 3 months when they can smile. So, now I'm really confused when I want to pay big bucks for pictures versus going somewhere less expensive.
IMO, newborn photos should be professionally done. They are the first shots of your new baby. Even though they can't really smile they look so darn cute and the pics always turn out amazing. If you don't want to hire someone, I would suggest Portrait Innovations. I have lots of friends and family that have used them and their pics turn out amazing, whether it was newborn or various month pics.

You definitely want professional newborn pictures. I know everyone says it, but babies change so quickly. They lose that newborn look very quickly. And I'm a sucker for the artist looking pictures. With DS I only did professional pictures as a newborn and at 1 year. I was going to do 6 months, but I decided against it. I ended up going to Portrait Innovations for his 3, 6 and 9 month pictures. They have always done a good job and we can get a bunch of pictures without spending a fortune. Then I can also hand out pictures to the various relatives who want them. It was also nice getting pictures with more of a traditional pose and background. They also have some cute props too.
This time around I'm doing newborn, 6 month and 1 year. I opted for the 6 month just because there was a good package deal. That's really the only reason.
