Babies on the Brain

I think I am about to make a pointless trip

I just worked up the courage to call my OB to get a referral to a fertility clinic.

The secretary told me that they deal with a certain one, that's fine, I have to travel a long distance either way.

But then she also told me that he will want to see me before he fills out a referral. So she made me an appointment. I kind of feel embarassed because I was JUST there last week and his plan was for me to wait out the summer and then start Clomid in September if I am not pregnant by then. I decided that now is the time to swallow my pride and see an RE and I was hoping that he would just send my file and a referral upon my request.

I am worried that I will get there and he is going to tell me *again* to wait a few more months and then we will discuss our next step.

(I have an hour and a half drive to see him)

  • i went through IF treatments with an RE.  all i can say is that your medical treatment is in your own hands and you are MORE THAN ENTITLED to a referall.  i don't know why they'd want you to come in to get the referall -- but that was a nurse speaking.

i think i would call back and ask why you have to come in, explain the drive etc.  i assume you need a referral for your insurance?

the way i look at it is thusly:  your OB works in vagina, right?  all things vagina.  but an RE's job is to get you pregnant.  that's his entire world.  i think you are doing the right thing -- it's what i did too.

  • If you agree to pay your copay (if you have those in Canada) will he do a phone consultation to save you the drive?

FIL's onsurance billing code sheet has a code for phone consultations.

The billing is 100% different. My OB appointments are covered by my government health care. The RE is completely OOP from what I understand. D's benefits do not cover anything fertility related.

  • I don't understand why he's asked you to wait until September--it's not like you've been TTC for 6 months. I would call back and ask to speak with the doc. If he won't get on the phone, explain to the nurse the situation, and that you are ready to move forward now, not later. You should not have to drive all the way back there just to get a referal.

  • I hope it's not a pointless trip.  Don't feel embarrassed about anything.

  • then can i ask why you need a referall?  just for a good name from your OB?  i bet you can find a recommendation online then.

You need referrals to specialists in Ontario. There is no self-referral here. At least not at the clinics that I looked into and I have never heard of anyone doing a self referral for anything.

    Off to do more research.

  • ah, canada! okay, i get it then.  i still think you should call and ask what the appt is for really.  that's a long drive for maybe nothing.
