Natural Birth

My doc will be on vaca the week of my due date.

I'm not torn up about it at all (she only delivers Thursdays and every 5th weekend) but I'm a little disappointed that this lowers my chance of having her deliver me even further. But it must be SUCH a hassle scheduling vacation when you're an OB and she deserves one!

Her partners are all ok--I've met them, but they're not as encouraging re: going med free as she is. And the med free rate at my hospital is 2%. No lie. She recommended hypnobirthing and thinks it's great, but her colleagues seem to think it's a bit quacky, so I expect a bit more resistance than I would have recieved from her. And she also knows my preferences really well, whereas they aren't nearly as familar.

Ah, well. What can you do, right?  In retrospect I wish I had chosen a CNM, but hindsight is 20/20.

  • Are you going to have a doula?

Most of the people I have talked to have said that it is the nurses you have to be concerned with rather than the doctor anyway, so I doubt the baby catcher will have much effect on your birth once you have chosen the hospital.

  • My MW is going out of town the weekend after my due date (I'll be 40w3d at that point).  I'm a little upset as I've never met the back up (I have an appointment to meet her the day before my MW leaves) but, the student midwife and the birth assistants I know will be there no matter what.

Not much to do about it!  I got all worked up then decided just not to have the baby that weekend.  ;)

  • I love my OB and she's 100% cool with me going natural, but I'm not overly concerned about it if she's not the one to deliver me.  Like PP said, it's mainly the nurses you have to deal with since the OB will only be there for the pushing!  We've got a doula and I think she'll help tons with that.  She can help my DH run interference if the nurses start to give me grief.

  • Our CPMs will let you switch as late as 41 weeks, I think.  Might be worth it to check and see if there's a CNM that will take you.  Also - what are the chances you'll go into labor the Thursday of the week you're due anyway?  I'm thinking pretty slim :)  Don't rule her out just yet.  Also, you could ask if she would be willing to be on call for phone consults for your birth (if she's not on vacation).  It's worth asking!
  • Make sure you have someone along for the birth who is willing to stand up for your desire for a med-free birth. Preferably someone other than your SO. Other family member, doula, whatever... but you will need someone to remind YOU of your desire to go med-free and to help you resist the doctor's persistence that you have pain meds. Good luck!
  • I think my doctor is as well. I am going to ask her tomorrow.

Am not too worried about it as I am hoping everything goes well and when the time comes the only thing the OB needs to do is catch.

  • Thanks ladies! My Sister (who is an occupational therapist--worked in a hospital for years and now does EI) will be there. She's very comfortable advocating and speaking with doctors and nurses (DH really isn't) and she's read the whole Hypnobirthing book and is psyched to help. We considered a doula, but she really wanted to be there, so I told her as long as she's ready to step up, I was good with it (plus we're really close).

I also was thinking of when I call the doc and am ready to head in, I'll ask them to discuss with L&D that I want to go natural and to please assign a supportive nurse. I know some find it exasperating and some love it, so at least they'd know in advance.

I'm almost tempted to ask her to sweep my membranes on the 21st, hoping I'd deliver on the 22nd (her last day on), but that's probably overkill. I don't think it does anything unless you're ready, but why not let nature take it's course, right?
