Cereal/Purees when to stop

OK I know some people never give it to their LO.  My LO is a greater eater he eats a lot of finger food on his own.  He drinks plenty of formula so I know he is getting his iron and such.  He has about 30-35 oz a day.  For those that do cereal how do you know when to stop?  On the same note.....Once they are good feeding themselves and picking up food when do you stop the purees?  I am looking for insight/advice. Thanks

Re: Cereal/Purees when to stop

  • This is a great question. I was reading online that babies should eat puree's until a year old, but I'm not sure how true that is. DD is 9 months old and we are still doing cereal and puree's. I thought once I run out I'll stop the puree's, but I'm not so sure. A good question to ask the doctor.

Have you introduced any finger foods yet? DD has eaten pancake, noodles, mangoes, banana's, puffs so far. We are still trying new foods out and I still give her puree's on top of all of that.

Hopefully some of the experienced mom's can answer this question.

  • I just asked my friend this same question yesterday because her baby is almost a year old.  I too am interested to know.
  • This is definitely a great question.  DH and I were talking about this the other week.  We are still giving DD purees and cereal but she is also eating finger foods.  She only has 2 teeth right now, all top 4 are still trying to come in.  At her 9 month appt the dr said to keep doing what I am doing and to keep introducing new foods but not to give her anything that is hard to chew because she doesn't have any molars to break it down.
  • I think by 12ish months they should be on all table/finger foods.  If your LO is eating table foods now, I would just start reducing the amount of purees you offer and see how he/she does.  My pediatrician told me milk/dairy consumption for a 12 mo should be @ 16-24 oz.

  • I am so glad I asked a "good" Question.  I always feel like I am over thinking things.

He is 7 months old can eat a whole meal with his fingers.  He has tried and likes soy burgers, whole wheat pasta, mangos, avocado, peas, carrots, peaches, watermelon, cheese, cheerios, puffs.  I am adding new things every few days when I think of it(:  I always heard purees were practice foods and most of his nutrition comes from formula.  With that in mind I feel like once they move on to finger foods what is the point of purees?  Hmmm.

I am currently giving him cereal or yogurt for breakfast.  Then as long as he is not having an off day with drinking his formula I will not worry about the oatmeal.  When he is teething badly he refuses the bottle so I give him soupy cereal to help get his formula in him.

So far this is my plan.  I will see what he thinks about it in a few days(:  I am going to think of oatmeal as a meal ie breakfast.  I was doing it at every meal.

I look forward to others opinions.  Thank you.

FWIW I posted this on 6-9 but noone responded and in the same time there were several responses over here.  Not bad for us Bmore Girlies(:

  • I would think (and this is just my opinion) that if your LO is eating about the same amount of finger food as he was eating in puree form, then why not just skip the puree's and just give him finger food?

  • I think what you're doing sounds great.  EC had issues with purees, so she was off them within 6 weeks of starting - so right around 7 months.  She was feeding herself within a few weeks of going off of purees.  It was a it of a learning process but she got it pretty fast, in my book.  Just keep offering things to try, you're doing a great job.

And FWIW, EC had 6 front teeth for about 6 months, she only recently got a molar but she's been eating almost everything including raw carrots and apple with peel on for months.  Don't let the limited teeth thing hold you back - offer the foods carefully but some babies can handle those foods.

  • As far as the purees I think that the pp have given you some great advice.  FWIW I would stop the cereal now as it really doesn't have any nutritional value.  (Cereals were designed for very young infants whose digestive tracts weren't very mature.  Your LO is older now and so can handle other finger foods, purees or oatmeal for breakfast instead).

  • Thanks everyone!  Once again I should stop worrying about what "I should" do and listen to my LO!!!
