Daycare question from 1st time mom

Hi ladies, I'll be joining you in a few weeks when I go back to work Sad

I have a question regarding in home daycare, or even daycare centers. I know they are normally closed for the major holidays like New Years and Thanksgiving, but what about bank holidays such as Columbus Day or Presidents Day? I interviewed a lady today that take off all bank holidays (and of course its a paid holiday) and I thought this was crazy! Is this the norm? TIA!

Re: Daycare question from 1st time mom

  • all depends.

some daycares go with the local school system's holidays.

My daycare center is only closed a few days a year... We still pay the same amount each month, which is common.  But we KNOW when they will be closed a year ahead of time - so can plan.  that is one of the reasons we like a daycare center - never surprise us with a sick day, emergency day, etc.

depends on the daycare like pps said.  My daycare happens to only be closed on federal holidays, meaning they are open pretty much every day excluding weekends.  Sometimes they do close early before a big holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas.

  • We go to an in-home daycare, and they are only closed during T-giving, Christmas, and a couple days vacation during the summer.

Ditto this. Also, we don't pay her for holidays, and don't pay her for her vacation days, or ours. Plus our inhome daycare lady has 2 backups, in case of illness or whatever...

  • We use a center and they are closed for major holidays, a few teacher work days throughout the year and the week between Christmas and New Years.  We pay for a full week even when they are closed for a holiday or teacher work day.  We have one week "vacation" with her center where we don't have to pay and we don't pay for the last week of December when they are closed.
  • My center is only closed on major holidays, not bank holidays.  They do close every year on President's Day for an in-service day for the staff.

  • We use a center that is part of a church. So they follow all religious holidays as well as bank holidays. They are paid. The only break we get is 1 week a year we don't have to pay for vacations.
