WWYD re: induction at 39 weeks?

I posted this on the August board as well.  My doctor told me today (I didn't ask) that she would be ok with inducing me at 39 weeks - not earlier - if I wanted to.  The reason she threw it out there is because I have another child, and she knows it can cause a lot of anxiety to think about where to take her should I go into labor in the middle of the night.  My next appointment is at 35 weeks and she'll start checking me then.  The only way this induction would be an option is if I'm dilated and my cervix is "favorable".

Part of me wants to jump at the opportunity because I have been having anxiety about when I go into labor - we're 30 minutes from the hospital and so are my parents and sister, but they are coming from another direction.  Also, it works out perfectly that the day I'm 39 weeks, the doctor who delivered DD#1 (who I really like) will be on call as well.  But another part of me thinks I should let nature take it's course... I was a few days late with DD#1, but things moved along on their own.

Thoughts?

Re: WWYD re: induction at 39 weeks?

  • Unless there was a medical condition, no way you would get me to induce at 39 weeks, convenient or not.

That's just my personal opinion =)

Good luck making your decision, and congrats on your pregnancy!

  • The choice is really yours. I personally am against unwarranted induction b/c I believe babies come when they are supposed to. Women have been having babies for thousands of years, and it has managed to work out. But that is jmo.

If your Dr is comfortable with inducing you and you want it, then that is between you and them.

  • I agree with the PP.  I wouldn't induce unless need be, but your choice.  GL!

  • I definitely wouldn't.
I'm struggling about my induction on Friday, and that's @ 41 weeks...

    Hmmm

  • Nope. I wouldn't. There are plenty of women who would though.

The odds of more interventions and ending in a c-section (whether you are "favorable" or not) are just way more higher. Plus I personally go med free and the thought of being tied to a bed on a pitocin drip just make me shake with fear :)

Did you have a super speedy delivery with your first? If not I wouldn't worry about the time factor. Just call your parents as soon as you know you're in labor and you'll have plenty of time.

If your cervix is favorable, I say go for it!!
  • No internet stranger knows your situation like you do!  Only you and your doctor can determine what is best.  Good luck with your decision.

  • Good luck making your decision-

however if you are asking me- I would say NO WAY- I have a child as well- and i would never go in to get induced if there wasn't a medical reason to do so. I am just not for stepping in and playing around with this stuff- babies come when they are meant to come. plain and simple.

  • I definitely would!  Why not?  If your cervix is favorable and you're ready to go, then do it!  Who's to say you still won't have to be induced a few weeks later?  Go for it girl!

  • well i am sure i am in the minority...but I am ok with 39 wk inductions medically necessary or not.  I had one with # 1 (it was kind of a medical reason though), and I am scheduled for one next wednesday at 39 wks if I do not go into labor on my own.  It was offered to me, and at this point i am done and I will take it. I would love to go into labor on my own...but if not before next wednesday...then induction it is.

  • I wouldn't. Let nature take its course. I think docs are absolutely crazy when they offer inductions for any sort of 'convenience' reasons. Let your baby decide when he/she is ready.
  • Even though it is a super tempting offer, I'd wait until 40 weeks.

    Just what I'd do though!

    GL!

  • Honestly, yeah I'd do it.  If your cervix is favourable then why not?  Take some of the stress off yourself and your family.  If your doctor is comfortable with it, then I don't see a problem.

  • I would, if your cervix is favorable and the whole nine yards. You and your doctor can decide best, and there seem to be a lot of reasons for you to go that way.

Keep in mind also that a lot of people who are saying here "unless it's medically necessary" would change their mind if you were saying "induced because my husband's in the military and leaving in a week and wants to be there for the birth." Which is not saying this is an equivalent reason at ALL, but it's not "medically necessary" either -- yet there are few who would say boo about it.

So it really is up to you to say what's most important and feasible for you.

  • I do not believe in inducing early unless medically necessary....I feel bad enough scheduling a c-section before my due date (not a good canidate for version and baby is most definately still breech).  But I am one that believes the baby will come when s/he is ready...

yes I noticed this last time when I had ds. We did induce for that reason and because ds was getting very big. It was at 39 weeks. But I thought this was a good observation.

I just wanted to say, this is kind of a presumptuous statement.
"A lot" of the people who are saying this would change their minds? How do you know the thoughts and feelings of the majority of 'us'?
I will reiterate my statement that "unless medically necessary, there is no way you would get me to induce at 39 weeks".
Convenient or not, miserable or not, husband leaving the country or not...my baby is coming when he is ready, bottom line.
And this is coming from a woman who IS being induced this week, due to medical necessity. So nothing against inductions here - if medically necessary.

(I hope this didn't come off as rude. I meant it in no negative way, I just don't think you can assume how other people feel)

=) Sorry for going off-topic OP

    THIS!!

Oh, and check out my picture & ticker. :)

  • Honestly, I would LOVE to be induced at 39 weeks.  I am hot.  I am uncomfortable.  I feel like a beached whale.  I'm nervous about what we're going to do with DS.  BUT I just don't think I could pull the trigger.  I'd feel way too guilty.  I mean, the EDD is just estimated.  It could be off.  And there are risks associated with the birth of an early "term" baby (37/38 weeks), so...  on balance, I don't think I would.  Much as I want to!
  • I have a 2-year old, so I completely understand your stress, but I wouldn't do it.  If you have any hesitation, and it sounds like you do, just wait.
