Has anyone had high blood pressure already when you got pregnant? We want to start TTC for #2 soon and I have high BP that is treated with medication. My doctor says my current med is safe during pregnancy so I'm not worried about that at least.
If you had it, especially if you took meds for it, were you considered high risk? Did you have any pregnancy complications? I know the BP is related to being overweight and stressed and I am working on changes to help with those things.
Re: High BP before/during pregnancy
Most patients with chronic hypertension are considered high risk but that does not necessarily mean you will have any complications. You just need a little more monitoring than the average momma. A lof it depends on how controlled your blood pressure is and any other medical problems you have.
If you are well controlled on meds, your ob/gyn will manage you, and you will have periodic growth scans done by an MFM. You may expect to have non-stress tests and BPPs once you hit about 32 weeks. You will have some additional labs as well (baseline 24 hour urine in first trimester to measure protein; possibly an EKG, etc).
Best of luck TTC number 2!!!
All this above and I'm not a Dr like her.
I didn't have high blood pressure before getting pregnant but during my third tri, I had to take labetalol to help lower my pulse rate because I had hyperthyroid. Labetalol is what most use to lower blood pressure too. So it's not impossible to go complication free.
However, I would say to try to get has healthy as possible before you get pregnant. Speaking from experience...it was really hard being on bedrest while having a toddler who needed me. =(
