Fraternal twins that look identical:)

I'm sorry if this is a ignorant question but I've seen a couple of pictures of fraternal twins that you just can't tell them apart.  I thought fraternal twins were just supposed to look like brothers or sisters that were born 2 years apart.  Again, I'm so sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm just curious.

ETA: Does anyone have pics to prove this wrong, I'm very interested:)

  • I always thought the same thing too.  I have a friend that has fraternal girls.  Pretty much only she and her husband can tell them apart.

  • Supposedly the Olsen twins are fraternal!  Could have fooled me!

I have the "typical" kind of fraternals.  They're definitely brothers, but there is no way you would ever mix them up.

Some look just like siblings, no more alike than kids born years apart.  Some look so much alike you would swear they're identicals.  Genetics are funny!

  • Perhaps they are identical and the family just hasn't had them tested.  So often people assume di/di = fraternal and that is not always the case.

But if you consider families like the Duggars....where they all look similar...it's not too unreasonable to have fraternal twins that highly favor each other.

  • Are they fraternal through a dna test? You might think your having fraternal twins but if they are the same gender only a dna test can tell if they are fraternal or ID.

  • i know of brothers/sisters that look exactly alike only different ages, if they were the same age you wouldnt be able to tell them apart, but because they ARE different ages you can. just how the genetic cookie crumbles. also possible that the twins are actually identical but the parents never got them tested. i was told by ALL my dr. that the boys were fraternal because they were di/di but i had them tested anyway and they are identical. if i hadnt tested anyway i would have gone their whole lives telling people they were fraternal.
  • I have distant cousins that are fraternal twins that no one can tell apart.  I think they are about 15.  Their mom is considering get a second DNA test done.  I'm not sure if mine are identical or fraternal, but I can barely tell them apart.

  • Yeah, the Olsen twins are fraternal...I have cousins that are fraternal and they look like identical twins...curious to see if mine will look alike or not...we still don't know for sure if they will be id or fraternal but seeing that there are a good amount of twins on my mothers side...my guess would be fraternal...but there is a 25% chance that there id so we'll find out soon

    This!
My boys are obviously frat (see siggy pic :)) but we planned to get them tested if they looked like they might possibly be ID. 1 out of 9 sets of di/di twins is ID.

  • And personally, I am very skeptical that the Olsen twins are really fraternal. ;) I wanna see DNA test results on those two!

Same here.  I mean, c'mon... the two of them played ONE role on Full House for several years!

That's why I said "supposedly"!  I have serious doubts that they're fraternal.

I had my boys tested a few months ago, even though I was 99.99% sure they were fraternal.  Out of 15 markers that the test looked for, the boys only matched on 5!  They're WAY fraternal!

What's pea-kay's take on this is what I want to know.

My twins are very obviously frats.  I was curious during my c/s because all of the nurses were talking about how similar they looked.  I was pretty sure they had to be frats (Clomid) and I thought they looked nothing alike.  Wondering if it was just me being their mom seeing their differences I asked the nurses their blood types, they're definitely not ID.  Their blood is so easy to remember, A is A+, B is B+ (and JR is AB+)

THOSE ONSIES ARE AWESOME!!  Onsies that said Buy one, get one half off would be great too!! My doctor charges $3500 for delivery and then the other baby, she said is "half off"  (so $1700)

  • Yep. I never believed that they were frat but then Peakay pointed out that they might just think that because they were di/di, and I think she's right!

  • I could never tell my twin girl cousins apart when they were younger (I will have to dig up an old picture of them to see what I think now)  I did not know they were fraternal until they were older.

As adults they have the exact same body type and usually wear their hair the same but it is easy to tell them apart...as long as I see their face!

Here is a picture of them now:

i have always wondered this too!

when i first started dating dh i could not tell his sisters (frat twins) apart.  now i can tell easily.  i think they looked much more alike as children, and less and less as they've gotten older.  they still look similar though.

mine are so obviously frat, and it makes me wonder when people look at them and ask if they're id or frat.  hello people!

i'm sure there are twins who are mislabeled as frat... but is that always the case?

My sister's are 1 year apart and look exactly alike.  Their baby photos are nearly identical and as they got to be the same size/height everyone would mistake them for identical twins.

Fraternal doesn't mean they can't look identical, hell I've seen a lot of sibilings close in age that could pass as identical twins -- they are from the same gene pool afterall Smile

  • My girls are identical (same placenta, same gestational sac, same blood type) but I think they look very different due to their size difference.  I see similar features but never have any trouble telling them apart.  That's weird about the Olson twins.  The only fraternal twins I knew growing up looked very different, but sometimes families have all sibs that look alike.
