Inexpensive blackout shades?

We're in the process of moving the girls in together to share a room (in the room that Piper's currently in.) Kady will only sleep in a very dark room, so we need to find something to block out the light from the two windows (one large, one small) in Piper's room, as there are only light decorative curtains on her windows now. We really don't want to invest in expensive custom shades. I did a few google searches and found a some options, but many were only designed to be used a few times (stick on sheets) and some were obnoxiously ugly (I'd rather not get some huge black accordian shade.)

 Any suggestions?

  • I don't know how much you're willing to spend but I have been eyeing some blackout curtains from Pottery Barn Kids that got really good customer reviews.  We bought a blackout shade at Lowe's that was very reasonable.  We gave them the measurements and they cut it to size.  Another option: a friend of mine said she bought a blackout material at a fabric store and sewed it onto the back of her curtains.

  • We got ours at Lowe's and they are the stick on kind.  We're on our second pair in 2 years, but that's mostly H's fault (he broke the first pair).  They were ridiculously cheap (less than $10) and work very well.  HTH!

  • I asked about this a while back and got some really good suggestions. Here's the post.

  • I got blackout fabric at JoAnn's (it's from Roclon, I found it back by the decorator fabrics), and tacked it to the back of DD's shade.  It was incredibly cheap and works great.
  • We have roller blackout shades from Lowes. They weren't that expensive. Less than $40. They custom cut it for your window for free. Her room stays very dark.
  • I got ours at Meijer's.  They have several colors available, in 2 different lengths.  We got kind of an olive-green to go with our jungle theme in the nursery.  Anyhow, I think they were about $17 each.  They work great for keeping out light and heat.
