Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Introducing solids - when did you do it and why?

I know you can introduce solids anytime between 4-6 months but with the AAP saying you should wait to 6 months, I'm not sure when to do it. I'm pretty confident DS will be ready at 4 months (he already sits up assisted, is interested in food when I'm eating, always wants more food, etc). So, I'm wondering when you introduced (or when you plan to) and why you decided to then? TIA!

Re: Introducing solids - when did you do it and why?

  • 4.5 months and I did it early to help with reflux and it really has. Theres no rush, start when LO is ready!

  • i plan to wait until 6 months per the advice of my pedi. DD was a preemie so there's no rush.
  • we plan to wait until at least 6 months.

Why? Because there isn't a reason for us to not wait. If we started solids early, we'd just be doing it for us. It doesn't provide any benifit that early (unless there are medical issues) for EBFed babies.

  • We started solids with both of our boys at 4 months. Our pedi told us that DS2 could start at 4 months and he was definitely ready. He was showing interest in every bite of food anyone would take when he was near them and got mad when no one was giving the food to him! It was getting to the point where we were nursing him, or giving him 4 oz. of formula almost every hour. He now eats 2 containers of baby food a day and nurses or drinks a  5 oz. bottle (when I'm not home) every 2-3 hours. He is thriving just fine.. I should also mention that he got his first 2 teeth at 4 1/2  months. He is now days away from turning 6 months and has his third tooth coming through. He also is still only in the 30th percentile for weight... so he's certainly not getting fat.

Thanks for sharing! DS already has two teeth poking through at 3 months. I EBF and it seems like I'm doing it every 1-2 hours. I'm thinking it would be best for us to introduce baby food at 4 months (I'm making my own and we got a CSA this summer for the veggies), but I'm going to wait until his 4 month pedi appt to confirm with the dr.

  • We started solids at 20 weeks for several reasons.  First, DS was able to sit up and seemed interested.  Also, he is in the 10th percentile for weight and had increasing night wakings, so our pedi suggested it might help him to gain a bit and to sleep a bit better.  Third, he also had reflux and it did seem to help with that.  He LOVES  the solids and has gained quite a bit.  He was 12 lbs 12 oz at his 4 month appointment and today we went to one of our favorite baby stores where they have a baby scale available and he was 15lbs 15oz!  He also seems a lot less irritable, so I think it was the right choice for us.
