?s for those who were induced

So I am pretty much settled with the fact that I will be induced tomorrow ... whether I am 100% on board with it or not is another thing ... but I have a couple questions for those who have been induced.

What was the experience like? Do you think it was more painful than going into labor naturally? Any tips on ways to prepare for induction? Anything that worked for you to help accept the idea of being induced?

I'm getting nervous and this goes against everything in my ideal labor plan but I am taking the doctor's word on this being our best option at this point ... she knew my plan about wanting my labor to be as natural as possible.

Re: ?s for those who were induced

  • I was induced at 37 w 1 day because I had really low AFI.  My body was not ready at all for labor so it took awhile.  We're talking only just barely finger-tip dilated, no effacement or anything when we started so my body seemed to fight it for awhile.  Since I've never been or gone into labor naturally I have nothing to compare it to, but I did what I had to do to keep my baby and me healthy.

It sounds like your body is in a much more ready position than mine was so I would like to think that the pitocin will just get it going for you and your body will get in gear and take over.

I don't have any tips for induction.  I didn't know for sure that I was going to be induced until just before they admitted me, but I had a feeling that it was going to happen sooner than later after the 37 week mark.  I guess my best advice would just be to relax and just know that it will all be okay in the end.  I know it's probably so frightening and worrisome to you right now, but when all is said and done, does it really matter if you went into labor naturally or were induced so long as you have your healthy baby in your arms?

  • So I wasn't induced but I think I can answer some of your questions.  My water broke at 37 weeks 1 day and I checked into the hospital and didn't have any contractions for hours so they gave me pitocin.  I was barely dialated at all when they started the pitocin but it didn't take it very long to start working.  My contractions were strong but after spending a lot of time reading peoples birth stories when they went into labor by themselves I don't think my pain was any worse.  I did end up getting an epidural but I had to wait a long time to get it because I was waiting for a certain anesthesiologist and she was in a long surgery.  I don't think it would have been as bad if I had gotten up and done something but I laid in bed the entire time I was laboring so I was in probably the worst position to be laboring.  I had Rowen 13 hours after my water broke and about 8 hours after they started the pitocin. So for me getting it wasn't a terrible decision.

I know it is scary to not have things go the way you planned.  I didn't have anything go the way I planned in my labor.  But I figured that as long as my baby was healthy that was all that mattered in the end.  But I was so frustrated that things couldn't go more according to plan.  I have to tell you though, before being on these boards I didn't realize that inductions don't work a lot of the time.  Everyone I have ever known that has been induced it has worked fine.  I have heard lots of positive stories.  My SIL was induced before he EDD for the exact same reason as you.  My nephew was big but she said the induction process wasn't that bad.  She had my nephew 14 hours after checking in.

Just try to understand that the Dr is doing what they think is right for you.  Have faith in your Dr.  And good luck!

  • I had a lot of things working against me when I was induced, so I might not be your prime example.  First of all, my doc was a bit worried about Mari because she was so small.  He thought she was healthy, but wasn't sure.  I also had double hernia surgery 3 years ago that has since re-erupted (one of the hernias, re-erupted I mean) and I risked strangulating it from straining throughout my whole pregnancy.  My doc stripped my membranes early to try to coerce labor to start on its own (because of Mari's size) and I actually made negative progress from then on.

I was only in induced labor for 5-6 hours via cytotek (I think that's the name of it).  I never even made it to pitocin.  I contracted every two minutes, but the contractions weren't bad at all.  When they saw absolutely no progress in 6 hours, they gave me the option of going straight for the section or continuing to try to see what my body did and risk strangulating the hernia or just failing the induction.

Getting my baby out healthy was my motivation.  And in my opinion, surgery was a cynch.  Even though I've contimplated a VBAC for next time, I've pretty much tossed the idea, because the risks outweigh the benefits greatly.  Actually, the benefits are purely selfish.

Don't you worry, Jennifer.  It'll all work out the way it's supposed to.

  • Pretty much the exact same situation as Shannon, w/ pre-e & gd. Baby was 39w g age, based on the incorrect EDD by my midwife in the 1st practice I was a part of I was 40w 5 days. based on size and u/s my doctors knew that was going to be wrong.I had a scheduled induction to take place the following week because of my gd and failure to make further progress, but at my fetal diagnostics appt. I was at 3 AFI. Again like Shannon I had made very little progress on my own. I had been at 1cm for about a week when my body had gone into labor, but abruptly stopped. When I was put on pit I went through 1 & 3/4 bags before I started to make any progress, they were getting ready to prep me for a section, but I finally started to get things moving. I originally wanted a natural birth, but considering I probably wouldn't have lived through this pregnancy with out various medical intervention, a "natural birth" wasn't an option for me. When it came down to it I wanted what was best for my baby. I was and am willing to do anything for my daughter, so to give up my ideal birth plan was a small sacrifice to make. I trusted my doctor and am glad I did.

every woman is different, no pregnancy is the same. What was really hard for me was to just let go. Did I want a "quick" drug free labor like Carollyn? Absolutely! That was my plan. Would I have loved to be at a wonderful birthing center like Blayne? Yes. That wasn't in the cards for me though. When it comes down to it, although we had different birth experiences, we all have healthy and happy little girls. Labor is such a small part in the birth of your child. A few months later you don't care how you got that baby, you care that your baby is there.

what is your dr.'s feeling about some natural induction right now? Can you pump, use the birth ball, walk?

  • A little hope...

I went in to be induced at 38w 6d and my body was pretty much already starting labor.  I was hooked up to pitocin but it was never upped I only had the lowest dose and 6 hours later I had my baby.

It went too fast for me...I was expecting it to take forever based on what I had heard.

  • I was induced!

I went in at 4:00 on a Tuesday and I was given cervidil for 12 hours...at around midnight I started having minor contractions, than at around 1am my water broke...The cervidil came oit at 6:00am on Wednesday and I was given poticin at 8:00, I was only 2cm and 80% effaced still. I also got an epideral at this time....Than at about 1:00 my Dr checked me and I was 10cm...and well the rest is history...

To me the only difference with being induced and not is the extra day in the hospital...

  • I was not induced but just a couple things based on what I have heard/read.  I would suggest being open to the idea of an epidural if you have to be induced.  I have heard that contractions can be much more intense and painful with pitocin.  Of course I am all about natural childbirth and I do think you can do it, but I would say be prepared to consider it because it is not a failure if you do get one!  I knew that I would consider one if I had to be induced.  The only other suggestion is to do a little research on cytotec if that is what your doctor wants to use.  I don't remember if you read the Ina May book but I think that is where I read about it.  Good luck and hopefully your body gets going before then, but if not you will still have your beautiful baby very soon!
  • Thank you all for the great advice and input about the induction. I think I am going to go ahead with it tomorrow but am still hoping it happens on its own before then. I have been walking all day and bouncing on the exercise ball, just a little sexy time with DH and all my cards are played.
