PCOS-encouragement & advice needed

Here's a backstory... my cousin got married to the love of her life (a soldier in the Army) after he returned from Iraq, last year.  She is 23 and he is 27.  They are currently trying to get pregnant and start their family.  They are on somewhat of a time crunch because he is being deployed to Afghanistan in February or March.  She was diagnosed with having PCOS yesterday afternoon and was put on Metformin.  I know NOTHING about this, and she doesn't know much.

Is there any encouragment or advice anyone can give her?  I want to send this link to her when I have something to send.

PS I thought it may be beneficial for her to see an reproductive endocronologist.  She is currently seeing her OB.

Thank you in advance.

  • there is definetely hope. I agree, she should see an RE. My friend was ttc for 1.5 years, then got on clomid and got pregnant her frist cycle. (she has pcos too). Her RE should run all the blood tests frist tho, there is no point in getting pregnant if you cant substain it, so she needs to know her hormone levels are normal.

  • There is definitely hope.  However, I strongly urge her to see an RE.  I was with my OB for a long time trying to get things sorted out with my cycles.  Thankfully, he recognized that he couldn't do more for me and sent me to an RE.

After 6 months with my RE, I became pregnant.  However, this was after he did multiple tests to get me properly diagnosed & medicated, not to mention properly monitored.

There are many PCOS ladies who go on to have healthy babies - she just needs to get proper care from a specialist to get her on that path.

  • There are a lot of women on this board and on the pregnancy after IF (PAIF) and success after IF (SAIF) boards that have PSOC.  You should tell her to start posting on here and we can offer lots of help and support.  If she has been dx with PCOS she should be able to move on to an RE even if she hasn't been trying a year.  I moved to one within 6-7 months of TTC.  She can see an OB at first to do rounds of clomid and TI usually.  The OB just has to be one who monitors you while on medication with bloodwork and ultrasounds.  My OB did this, many do not.  There are also some great books out there that have tons on info on PCOS.  I got a couple off Amazon and learned a ton.

  • I second the RE, I have PCOS and got pregnant with Injectables.

    Good luck to her.

  • Yep. An RE is her best bet.

I wasted time doing unmonitored clomid cycles along with a low dose of met that my previous OBGYN rx. Wasted cycles.
