Babies: 3 - 6 Months

12lbs and 5 months!

We had a doctors appointment today and DS is only 12.2 lbs. He is in the 1st percential for weight. What a tiny boy! He wasn't a premie or anything. 6.5 at birth.

Anyone else have a baby this small? What did your doctor say about it? Mine wants me to start solids earlier then 6 months to help add calories.

Re: 12lbs and 5 months!

  • Mine were small at birth, but not preemies.  They were off the charts low at their last appt, but no one is worried about it

  • We are on the other end of the spectrum...lol. DD is 15lbs at 3 months.  95th percentile. As long as the pedi isn't concerned, neither are we.

  • DS was on the small end as well.  Timothy was 6 lbs 12 oz at birth and 12 lbs 12 oz at his 4 month appointment (our pedi has us come in at 4 months and then 6 months.  I was exclusively breastfeeding at the time, so she had me begin supplementing with formula as well as begin solids early.  He LOVES solids and today I actually took him to a baby store nearby that has an infant scale and he was 15lbs 15 oz (with diaper and clothes).  I could hardly believe that he has put on nearly 3 lbs in only 5 weeks!.  Try not to worry.  Baby growth is not always linear.  GL!

  • How about your daughter?  Was she also small as a baby?  Are you or your SO small framed or petite?
  • My son is a big boy. He went to the doc today (5 months old) and weighed 18 lbs 1 oz. My nephew is about the same age and weights 5 lbs less than my LO. some babies are just smaller than others! I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.
  • That's so funny! I was just getting ready to write a post about how tall DS is.  Yesterday he measured in at 26 inches (born at 21 inches), and he's 18lbs 6oz.

Nobody seems concerned about the fact that he's getting longer faster than he's getting wider, so I'm not worried.

I think you should join the peanut club!! ;o)

  • We just had to go in this week for some shots and she weighed in at 10 lbs even. She is 3 months old... It was lower than the 5th percentile, I don't remember exactly. Dr said she's just a peanut... Did not seem worried at all. She was 6 lbs at birth.

Funny thing is my one of my besties just had her first, a boy and he weighed 9 lbs 13 oz at birth!!! Wowzers!

  • I have preemies. Adjusted age, they're perfect and on the chart but actual age, they're so small. My doctor isn't worried because they are preemies. They should catch up by a year or so.

Are you breastfeeding? Does DS seem satisfied after eating?

If you are bfing you could always go to an LC to see if they can determine how much LO is getting each time.

Perhaps you could increase your supply and that might help.

If you are FF maybe try adding another bottle in?

Ds was 11lbs at 5 months which prompted a trip to an endocrinologist and GI. He was only 5lb8oz at birth but fell off his own growth curve. His seems to be a combo of bad reflux/milk protein allergy and hating bottles at daycare . We do some solids but just started be side he's very interested...he won't eat much and I make sure it doesn't replace milk.

My daughter and I are both petite! DD wasn't as small as DS at this age though. It wasn't until a year that she dropped down to the 2nd percentile.

I'm exclusively breast feeding. My supply hasn't dropped from what i can tell.

  • DD is 12 lbs now... dont feel baby. I have a little peanut too... she is very healthy and eats like crazy.. I just had really bad supply issues and didnt know it. But she has been gaining like crazy ever since we figured it out. Every baby is different.
