carriers - babyhawk? ergo?

I know there have been a million posts over my lifespan here at the bump, but naturally I can't find any of them when I need them.

We're trying to figure out if it's worth purchasing another carrier.  She's outgrown the moby & baby bjorn, but I have *no* idea what kind of carrier to purchase or how long we would use it.  She's about 24-25 lbs right now if that makes a difference.

I'm leaning towards an Ergo, but really only because they sell them here in town and I could pick it up before our next flight.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!!

Re: carriers - babyhawk? ergo?

  • We LOVE our Ergo!  We might get a second one.
  • Loading the player...
  • Gah and now I just found a Beco that I like....I guess my question is whether or not there is one that is hands down the best?  Or are they all pretty similar?

I'm not super particular about it, I just want...

    - neutral so that Jake will wear it

    - easy to put on (no wrapping like Moby)

    - able to carry her on back & front

  • The ergo is super easy to put on.  We have a pink one, which is why we want to get another.  Jason will wear it around the house, but not outside. Smile  You can do a front, back, and hip carry.
  • We LOVE our Beco. We have it in basic black and my husband wears it more often than I do!  It does seem similar to the Ergo, though...
  • LOVE the ergo (hated and sold my babyhawk).  Want to borrow mine and see if you like it?
  • I have both.

I loved my Babyhawk until I bought the Ergo.  The Ergo is WAAAYYY better.  I have been planning to sell my BH for a while and just haven't gotten around to it.

  • We have a mei tei carrier which I am loving right now.  Mady is about 21 pounds (I think).  I love the back carry when they are this heavy because it saves my back.  This one is easy to carry in a diaper bag.

That being said I really really want to get an Ergo and then I can stop buying baby carriers.  I almost have DH convinced that we need one even though Mady is already 18 months old.  She prefers to be worn rather than go in a stroller.  She will let us get all of our shopping done and then some when I wear her on my back.

  • I have both a babyhawk and a beco. In my mind, I think of the beco and ergo as pretty much the same (though if you talk to Kat, she can probably tell you the differences, she knows carriers forward and backward!)

For her age and size, beco/ergo all the way.

I loved, loved, loved my babyhawk when Paige was itty-bitty. Once she hit about 6 months, I don't know how I would have even tried to use it.

ETA: FWIW, we rarely use a carrier at all anymore... usually only if we go on like, long hikes through the woods. Now that she's walking, Paige wants no part of being in a carrier.

  • We're going with an Ergo, because from all I've read, it puts baby in a better position (with less pressure on the hips) than others.

Have you checked out reviews and comparisons on thebabywearer? That website helped me tremendously!

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies! Krista - I'll check out that site but I think I'm going to go with the Ergo. I hesitate to purchase one given the $100 tag, but we've run into so many cases lately where we've had to carry O for long periods of time and I've wished we had carrier. We're taking her down to FL to visit my sister and parents and the thought of relying solely on the stroller makes me nervous. We were exhausted after our trip this past weekend.
  • I love my Pikkolo.  It is another SSC; it does front and back carries.  However, you may need a support belt for 25+ lbs.  Wylee is at about 22 lbs and I still don't need the support belt but I know eventually I will.

  • Another vote here for the Ergo.  I don't have any experience with Beco or BabyHawk, but I ordered the Ergo when it was on Babysteals a couple of months ago, and I LOVE IT!  :)  So easy to use and can carry 3 different ways.

  • One thing about the front carry in an ergo is that Olivia will have to face in. If she likes facing outward like she does in the Bjorn you may have a challenge.

That being said, I lurve my ergo. I vote for that (or a Beco, which comes in way cooler fabrics!) over a BH. Although, a BH does have its place in a carrier stash!

Hm.  That could be a problem.  She's a nosy little one and loves to be able to check everyone out.
