Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Those with LOs with SEVERE acid reflux.....

what has worked for you? we have been putting rice cereal in bottles since one month of age. DD has been on Zantac, Prevacid and Pepcid and nothing is working! We are doing some testing tomorrow at the hospital to rule out other things, but I am 99% confident that it is just acid reflux. DS also had horrible acid reflux and the next step was to put him on reglan, which I didn't want to do but he was a little older and was starting to grow out of it (close to one year)...I don't know what my options are for her. It is terrible. She has projectile vomiting ALL day long. I feel so bad for her and we are all miserable.

Re: Those with LOs with SEVERE acid reflux.....

  • I have no advice but wanted to say I feel for you and good luck with the testing, I hope they find something that works for you guys ... DS doesn't have it severe but we're on zantac - it's helped for the pain and screaming after bottles but didn't touch the spitting up.

  • Asher is on the max dose of Prilosec and Zantac.  He is also on Neocate formula.  I would never put him on Reglan.

  • Please please please do not use Reglan!!! Check out refluxrebels.com.  There is a link to their forum on there, and those women are very knowledgeable.  We are using Buffer Babies to properly dose Prilosec OTC.  Buffer Babies also allows you to dose without regard to meal times, which has been huge for us.
  • We are erithromycin 4x a day and prilosec
  • We are erithromycin Which is the same concept of reglan but doesn't have the black box warning or the side effects and my LO takes it 4x a day and prilosec 2x a day and so far it's working, the erithromycin helps move the food along so she digest it and not spit up. It works!! She's also in 27 cal nutramigen which is helping her gain weight( it's just extra scoops of the formula) because her reflux was so severe she lost a 1/2 in 2 days from non stop spit up. If you have to I would do reglan if erithromycin doesn't help, stay strong and it will pass. I hope your LO feels betwr and if you have any questions PM me
  • I also do not recommend Reglan. We used it with DD and her vomiting actually became less of an issue once we took her off of it.

Also, there is a difference between projectile vomit, vomit, and spit up.

Projectile means it can shoot... like across the room.

Vomit is a measurable amount that comes out.

Spit up is a small to fair amount that comes out.

Also, is she in pain, not gaining weight, etc.?

  • So sorry to hear that you and your LO are having such a tough time!! DD has severe reflux that we are still trying to get under control. I agree with the PP about E'mycin if she does have motility issues. I would try that over Reglan. Also, what type of formula is she on? Could she possibly have a milk/soy protein intolerance? Can she be put on an elemental formula like Neocate or Elecare? Hang in there. I hope things start to turn around for you and your LO soon. It sucks!!
