Trying to Get Pregnant

**ermaderma**

I was just looking at your latest blog entry and I wanted to let you know that I've come across some blogs where ladies with PCOS have had a lot of success with the GI Diet by Rick Gallop (their doctors recommended that they start it to see if losing weight would regulate their cycles).

The GI Diet was not created only for women with PCOS, but the guidelines it gives you makes sense if you think about some of the things that PCOS can cause (i.e. difficult to lose weight, easy to gain weight).

You might be able to get the book out of the library if you don't want to buy it.

If you want any more info on the GI Diet, just let me know.

(I hope that you don't mind me giving you this suggestion! I started following the GI Diet in January in hopes that it would help my cycles...it hasn't- obviously- but I've lost 15 pounds and just feel so much better in general. Before following this diet, I swore that no diets worked for me since it was always a huge struggle to lose weight.)

Re: **ermaderma**

  • I will have to take a look at it! I had heard that low carb diets work and i have done Atkins in the past, but when I started up again, I didn't lose anything :(

Are you being treated for PCOS? My ob wants me to wait a year (Feb. 11), and then do a combo of met/clomid, but won't actually try to treat the PCOS. I just made an appt with an endo whose specialty is PCOS, so hopefully they will treat it instead of ignoring it!

  • Nope, I'm not being treated. My current OB thinks that "treating" PCOS means that I should be put on birth control pills.  Um, no.  She won't even do blood tests or ultrasounds to see what's going on.  (I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18 so at least I know what's "wrong" with me.  That doctor also "treated" my PCOS with bcp. I  have had 2 other doctors in between that one and my current and they all "treated" my PCOS with bcp.  What a waste!).

My current OB won't give me Met until I have been TTC for 6 months and then she just wants me to use it to TTC and then she wants to put me back on bcp after I have a kid. I won't ever take bcp again.

I'm actually going to make an appointment for next year with a group of doctors that are about 2 hours away from me that actually TREAT PCOS and don't just try to mask the symptoms. I can't wait.

The GI Diet is pretty close to Atkins and South Beach but WAY more liveable.  It's not nearly as restrictive since it lets you eat carbs, but only "healthy" carbs and in limited quantities. It's totally do-able.  The only caveat is that it isn't a crash diet so you won't lose a ton of weight up front- it really is gradual (because you know, it's actually a healthy way to lose weight!!!), but the more you stick with it, the more you lose.

I tried to use WW to lose weight...and yeah, that didn't work.  I didn't lose a pound and I was STARVING all the time.  I eat more on the GI Diet than I have in my entire life and I lost 15 pounds!

Yep, same with my OB! I never want to go on hormonal BC again either. I demanded that they check my insulin, and they finally drew blood and told me it was normal. Yeah, then after reading on here, I realized they didn't even order the right test to see if I am insulin resistant. i am hoping that this new endo will want to treat PCOS. I am assuming that having your PCOS as one of your specialties means that he will, but I guess we'll see!

And thanks for the diet recommendation. I am going to the library today, so I will definitely look for it there!

  • I hope your new doc will give you whatever it is that you need!!  It really makes me sad that so many doctors are just so uninformed about PCOS and treatments for it (like Met or other insulin lowering drugs!).

    GL!
