im a Dr Suess lover. i grew up reading them and got a membership for DS so he has about 100 of them already..baby will enjoy these too. reading is a big part of our household so im always looking for new books to read the the kids.
We already have a ton from my stepsons (I think we have ALL of the Dr. Suess books). But I am planning on getting The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends.
Our goal is to eventually own everything that's one a Caldecott Medal. We already have quite a few. DH is also a big Seuss fan, so as many of those as possible as well.
I LOVED this book called Fabian the Fish Boy and will be finding it for my LO before he arrives. I also had tons of Bearstien Bears books that I'll be picking up for him as well.
I'm aiming for owning the WHOLE Dr. Suess collection...I had the books as a kid and I like to believe I got my silly sense of humor from being obsessed with the Doc.
All the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie set, anything Dr. Seuss, fairy tales (classic, not necessarily Disney). I dont remember the author, but there is also this book called "I'll love you forever" that makes me cry whenever I read it.
"We like nothing better than buffing our Zygoma. And imagining a horny time traveling long overcoat purple scarf wearing super sleuth nordic legend fuck fantasy. Get to work on that, internet." Benedict Cumberbatch
LO already has over 60 books in his library! His aunt gave him about 30 books at the shower and I've collected many more for him. I love to read and he will too
tons of baby classics like: good night moon, love you forever, several dr seuss books, guess how much I love you, pokey little puppy, some paddington bear books, lots of color/number/shapes books, an eric carle collection, and many more!

Love that book!
Also, I'm adding Saint-Exupery's "Little Prince" to the registry even though he won't be able to read it until he's much older. There's a beautiful pop-up edition available now.

Are you talking about the one where the mom sneaks into her little boy's room as he grows up and rocks and signs to him? My DD LOVES that book! I can't remember who wrote it either, but definitely worth looking up.
I forgot a few. One of my favorites, and my SIL's favorite are both out of print but we located pretty good used copies of both. "Storytime Treasury", and "Cassie's Magic Flowers". Not sure of the author of either.

It's by Robert Munsch. We were given two copies of it, I absolutely love it. Plus someone told me that he wrote the book after his wife suffered multiple miscarriages. Apparently someone told him to help the grieving process, write a book to the babies that would have been and that book is what he ended up with.
We also have some Dr. Suess, The Hungry Caterpillar, and several of the Little Critters books.
I don't think this is a classic, but I LOVE this book! It is a little on the longer side. The Gruffalo- it is a wonderful book w/ rhyme and sing-song cadence/rhythm.
My fave book as a kid was Go Dog Go. I can still recite almost all of it. I wouldn't call it a classic but my LO will definitely have it in her library.
Also necessary:
Goodnight Moon, I'll Love you Forever, Guess How Much I love you, and A.A.Milne's Pooh books.
For new books, I just found one called I Love You Stinky Face. It is so adorable and I would suggest it to just about everyone

There are so many books I am planning on adding to our collection. Most of them have already been named, but so far no one has said Pat the Bunny. This was my sister's FAVORITE book!! (she's 9 yrs younger than me) I think my mom had to buy a couple of copies of it because they kept falling apart.
I am really looking forward to seeing what others get for LO. I know my mom has a huge stack at home already, and my cousin gave me a couple of books and a wooden basket specifically for books that she hand painted. It has DS's name and 2010 on one side, and the other side says "Please read it to me again said little Keegan H." It has been my favorite gift so far!
New moms- beware of I Love You Forever. I have never, ever been able to make it through that book w/o crying. Ever! It's just such a sweet and moving book. Gah!
While this may not be considered a classic, I'll add this book to the list of must-haves The Monster at the End of This Book.
I already own pretty much everything that's been mentioned, although my Seuss collection is a little on the lite side. However, things that haven't been mentioned:
Velveteen Rabbit - one of my faves as a kid
Sandra Boynton Hippo collection - they are absolutely hilarious
Grimm Fairy Tales - I have an uber old copy that's actually a little scary because it was written before things were so ridiculously pc. I love it, and we'll save the 'real' version of Cinderella for when the kid is a little older.
I also have a giant library of 'adult' classics that will make good young kids stories, like some Charles Dickens and Watership Down.
Nevermind crying at the end of I Love You Forever - I cry at the end of The Giving Tree, too! Maybe I'm just a wuss
