Trying to Get Pregnant

If you have PCOS...

...is charting a waste of time?

Before DS my periods usually came once every 3-6 months.  I never know when they're going to happen.  I've only had one real period after DS (had a little bit of spotting when he was about 4 months, not sure if I should count that).

Anyways, we want to start TTC this winter.  DS was a surprise, so this is all new to me.  I'm thinking it's just going to be a big guessing game, and a lot of testing.

Is there anything else you would recommend for someone in my situation?  Maybe a good book or site for those who don't regularly ovulate?

TIA!

  • I have PCOS and charting is so NOT a waste of time.  If I didn't chart, I would never know if I actually O or when AF is going to come!!  Knowing those two pieces of information are key for my piece of mind.

Having irregular and long cycles can be hard.  I don't use OPKs like other girls with shorter cycles do.  I've only had 6 cycles since last July so it has made it hard for me to see any patterns that I might have with my CM.

BUT I think I will now always chart, even when not TTC.  I just like knowing what's going on with my body too much to not chart.

  • I would definitely chart to see when/if you ovulate. I have charted since going off BCP (I was dx with PCOS before) to confirm that I don't ovulate.

I would suggest using OPKs (def internet cheapies!) and just test when you see fertile CM. Women with PCOS tend to have multiple patches of fertile CM. That is why charting is super helpful, so that you can confirm ovulation.

Check out soulcysters.com for more info about PCOS. I learned a ton over there!

  • I definitely don't think charting is a waste of time. I don't O regularly, although I'm not sure if its pcos. It really helps me to know if I ever ovulate and if I don't I think it will be helpful to bring my charts to my doctor.

  • I have PCOS and I still chart, even if it is a waste of time! My PCOS wasn't really apparent until after having DS, (He was a pleasant surprise too). Check out soulcysters.com, its all about PCOS, and there are a few of us TTC #2 with PCOS.

  • Wow, you ladies are awesome.  I really thought you were going to say it was a waste of time.  I never thought to chart when not TTC either.  It would be nice to know when my period might come.

I will definitely check out that site, and thank you carishabob for the nice comment on my son! :)

Best of luck to you all! :)

  • I have PCOS and I chart. The last two cycles, I did in fact ovulate, so charting was a big help in determining that. My RE wants me to continue to chart as well. I wouldn't say it's a waste of time, just maybe a little more frustrating.
  • I think charting would actually help you know when you ovulate.  Cute Kid!
