Hi All,
I got pre-e very late in the game around 37.5 weeks. They induced me just 4 days after I got diagnosed. I am just starting the whole TTC thing again for the second baby, so I haven't been to my OB yet to ask these questions. But I am wondering if anyone knows if pre-e typically comes back earlier the second time around? It seems that it definitely comes back.
TIA ladies!
Re: Pre-e and 2nd babies??
It doesn't always come back... my docs told me only 20% chance of recurrence. Also, from what I've read, it is often milder in subsequent pregnancies if it does come back. From anecdotes I've seen, that means it might actually come back later, if at all.
I am just now reaching the point when I started with PIH with DD. So far so good.
Pre-e w/DD #1 -- now age four! GD and PIH w/DD#2 -- now age two! GD and unexplained third trimester bleeding with baby # 3 -- due Feb 27!
Wooo hooo!! That is great news! Thanks so much
And best of luck to you for the rest of your pregnancy. Great news about the late arrival of PIH!
typically the later you devloped it the less likely it is it will return. So those who had it at 25 weeks and developed very early and who had HELLP are also more likely for it to reoccur.
I developed pre-e at 33 weeks and delivered at 35. I had PIH since 26 or so. I'm hoping to avoid it all together. It was terrible and very traumatic for me, so I cant wait to meet with my new doc and see what course of action they will take to help me prevent it this time!
I know how scary it can be to face it again.

My doctor said the opposite- that it is more likely to come back a 2nd time. However, because they know you're prone to it, they're much much pro-active about treating it early.
I got pre-e very quickly and severely at 35 weeks last time and had an emergency c-section at 36 weeks. It was awful- my kidneys shut down and it took months to recover.
This time I started having protein in my urine at 28 weeks. I cut back on what I was doing at work and made it to 32 weeks before my BP started going up. It was still in normal range, but monitoring it at home, I could see a trend of it geting higher. The minute it hit 140/90, my doctor put me in the hospital on bedrest. Extreme? Yes. But I've been here a week and I no longer have pre-e. My protein came waaay down and my BP is within normal range. He would let me go home but it's 95-102 degrees outside all week and he just wants me to go one more week before he delivers the baby so he thinks it's best for me to stay here rather than deal with the heat.
So, this is a long way of saying that even if you get pre-e again, it doesn't have to be the same experience as the first time. We are all much more aware of the symptoms having had it the first time and can do things to prevent it from possibly getting worse. 8 more days and I'll be a 2nd pregnancy pre-e success story!
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again
These stories were so helpful! Thank you...I wish I had had a follow up conversation with my doctor about it, but at 6 weeks pp with my first I was not sure if I was going to have another! Ahh sleep deprivation gotta love it.
Thank you again and I wish you all the best with future and current pregnancies and keeping that pesky pre-e in check!
Once you've had pre-e, your chances of getting it a second time are greater than your chances were of getting it the first time (5-8% percent chance of getting it the first time, 20% chance of getting it again). That being said, you're still less likely to get pre-e a second time around than you are to get it. I think that's what the previous poster meant--yes, once you've had it, you're more likely to get it again than the average pregnant woman, but not more likely to get it than not get it. Does that make sense?
I had severe pre-e and HELLP with my first son (developed at 33 weeks, delivered at 35). I had PIH with my second son and went on modified bed rest at 30 weeks, but never did develop pre-e. My second son was healthy and born at 39 weeks and weighed an insane 11 pounds, 10 ounces. It is possible to not have pre-e after having had it severe or having had HELLP to go along with.
If it makes you feel any better, my MFM told me that in his 30+ years of practice, pre-e was, in his experience, a first pregnancy issue. The later you develop it, the less likely you are to get it again.
Good luck!
