DCP trying to eliminate morning nap at 8 months?

Sorry for a nap question, I know there are tons of them, but something about this just isn't sitting right with me and I wanted to get some more experienced feedback.

DS wakes up at around 6 or 6:30 and plays in his crib until we go get him, usually around 6:45 (sometimes he'll fall back asleep for 20 minutes or so, but not so much anymore).  He is usually rubbing his eyes and pulling at his ear, indicating that he is tired, by the time I leave to take him to DCP, which is 8 or so.  He goes down for a nap from 8:30-10, then he takes his afternoon nap with the other kids around 1.

DCP has been telling me that she wants to eliminate his morning nap because she thinks it's causing his afternoon nap to be shorter.  I am gathering that she does not like that he is waking up before the other kids and is shortening her afternoon break, though she hasn't flat-out admitted it.  I really feel that DS still needs his morning nap, but I just want to make sure that it's not typical or standard practice to start working on getting down to one long afternoon nap at this age.  WDYT?

  • I don't know much about daycare and whether or not that is a common practice, but J is 10 mo. old and still needs a morning nap.

  • He still needs his nap and I would be telling her that you do not want it shortened or eliminated.  When he starts dropping that morning nap there will be days where he takes it and days he won't.  But I don't like the idea of forcing him to not take it when he is clearly showing signs that he isn't ready for 1 nap a day.  How long is his afternoon nap?

It's always at least an hour!  That's what was so surprising to me.  It's not like he's only sleeping for 30 or 45 minutes.  An hour is the shortest it ever is, and usually it's more like 1.5 hours.

  • His naps are 100% normal.  Tell her to suck it (well, not really).  Just tell her that while she feels it needs eliminated that you feel, as his mother, that he still requires it and that you also feel his afternoon nap is also a good length.

  • My LO definitely needs his morning nap too. He's also 8 months, and I can't imagine him staying awake from 7am until 1pm (at least, not without being a total nightmare).

This is what my 2 YEAR OLD does.  2yr and 8mos are totally different.  I think the DCP of the original poster needs to suck it up and let the boy sleep!

  • We started daycare a month ago.  Right from the start, she was trying to get DS to only take one long afternoon nap.  The second week, he was super cranky for her.  She went on vacation the next week and I stayed home with him.  When he gets to stay home, he sleeps on his own til 8 or 9.  With daycare, he's up at 6 or 7.  So yeah, he needs that nap!  The next week when I took him in, I told her that he needed the nap, even if it only lasts 20 or 30 minutes.  And he's been much happier for her since then.
  • My DD absolutely still needs 2-3 naps each day.  Every book that I've read said that at this age, LO's should still be sleeping around 13-14 hours a day.   I think that you need to tell your DCP that your DS still needs that morning nap, unless she wants a very cranky, overtired baby on her hands.

  • She is wrong! An 8 month old needs both naps...tell her to read some literature or better yet, take the kids cues!!

DD's morning nap is her only consistant nap. She would be a monster without it.
  • That's crazy and you'd think she'd want him to take his morning nap since that's one less child she's got to watch for those 2 hours!  DS still takes 3-4 naps a day at 9 months old so I would never deprive him of a morning nap!
