Flip video camera

Does anyone have the Flip?  Is so do you recommend getting one or are there better ones out there?  I need something fairly easy to use and upload to send videos to family.

Re: Flip video camera

  • We plan to get one! It's not the most swanky thing out there, but it will get the job done, and well, and you can't beat the price.

  • I love my Flip HD. The quality is good, the sound is surprisingly effective and its unbelievably easy to use.

  • We have it.  It's great and even someone as technologically challenged as me can use it.
  • While we do have a Sony Handycam and really like that option, we also have the Flip. It is great to have with a little one.  I leave it on the counter and never a miss a thing O does.  It turns on instantly and takes a second to begin recording.  It fits right in my camera bag, so I can bring it along without having a second big bag to carry.  It is basically idiot proof.
  • DH got the Kodak Zi8 instead of the Flip - it shoots in 1080 HD, turns on instantly, has a one-button upload straight to YouTube... and most importantly to DH, it uses SD memory cards (the Flip has fixed internal memory).  We have a 16gb card for it, and DH has never managed to fill it up in one outing.

  • I don't have the Flip. Instead, I'm set on getting the Kodak Zi8, for the same reasons PP mentioned. Here's a comparison chart if you want to size up some of the specs of each one:

Edited to correct the URL; doesn't seem to direct you straight to the comparison chart. Sorry!

  • I LOVE our Flip! I have had it for almost 2 years, so it isn't the HD version, but it is amazing!! I use it at home and in my classroom all the time. It is so easy to carry in your purse or diaper bag and drag out compared to our small video camera. Just don't skimp on a cheap one because the picture quality sucks!
  • We have the UltraHD and love it.

We originally bought it for underwater shots while snorkeling/scuba, but it is so user-friendly that we end up using it all the time.  Takes surprisingly clear video/photos and the software is so simple!

  • I have one and love it.  It is small and easy to use.  I just keep it in my purse so I can take videos whenever I'd like.  Then it has a USB connected to it so you just plug it right into the computer to get your files.

The biggest problem I have with it is that it is so small that sometimes people don't know you are recording something (it looks more like a still camera maybe?) and sometimes say silly things and ruin a video. hehe.

  • We LOVE our flip!! Use it all the time!
  • I have the flip and love it. It's a couple years old, so not the HD version, but I love it and use it all the time.

  • Great, thanks everyone!
  • They are surprising decent cameras. We use them at Emerson for the freshman. It's the first class that they are learning to shoot and report on stories, so we don't want to overwhelm them with the technology of the more high tech cameras that we have for the more advanced classes. They all pick them up quickly and actually shoot really good video and the audio is decent as well. Not a bad investment for a family camera.
