Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Is my pedi too liberal? WDYT?

I took my LO to the pedi today for his 1 month appt and asked the pedi what type of water to use with powder formula and she said tap water was fine (city water). I asked if I had to boil it and she said no but I'm still a little iffy about this being that he's only 1 month. WDYT?

Also, I've been sterilizing his bottles and asked when I could stop doing that and she said I didn't have to do it. Just wash with soap and hot water? I always heard you had to sterilize for the first 3 months? WDYT about this also?

 TIA!

  • Then I must be a liberal.  I've always used tap water and just soap and water to wash bottles after the initial sterilization.

Ummm....have I been doing it wrong?

  • i only sterilized the bottles for the first use.  then every week or so we'd throw them in the dishwasher on the "sanitize" setting.  i don't think its necessary to sterilize them every time.

as far as tap water - we just use the water that comes out of our fridge - i guess it's filtered but nothing fancy.

  • I use soap and water to wash her bottles.
  • not necessarily...maybe I'm just too anal..LOL Smile
  • I've heard of using just tap water to make powder formula and only washing bottles with soap and hot water, but IMO, I would never do it.  I don't use powder formula, but I always sterilize all of my bottles at least once a day after washing them with steaming hot soapy water immediately after a feeding.  I guess I'm just paranoid.

  • I've read that you should use tap water for your LO's bottles so that they receive the flouride in it.  This is not found in bottled water and is good for their teeth.  I never sanitized my bottles either, only on the first use and as the PP said in the dishwasher.
  • We just use the dishwasher on our bottles.  I don't like the tap water here (the complex we live in has old pipes that they are SLOWLY replacing) so use bottled water.

  • Maybe I'm "too" liberal as well because I already do the things he's saying you can stop doing.

  • we've always just washed bottles with hot water and soap and used tap water.

  • I only sterilized the bottles before initial use, I just wash with soap and water.  We supplemented with formula a week in the beginning and it didn't cross my mind to use anything other than tap water.  It's what the rabbit and I drink....

  • i've always read exactly what your pedi said... the bottles only need to be sterilized before the first use and then you can just wash them.

if you're concerned about using tap water, get a PUR water filter.  it filters out more impurities than a brita.

  • I use nursery water and wash and sterilize the bottles for every use. It doesn't take long to do so I guess I don't see the point in not doing it.
