North Dakota Babies

What would you do (poll)

So I know I have an option about being induced tomorrow or not and I am still a little stressed with the idea so I am curious what you would do.

Here are the details: I am dialated to 4 c.m., 80% effaced at last check. Doctor is concerned that the baby is getting too big and has offered induction to give me a better chance at having a vaginal delivery since I don't have the widest of hips. I understand that very small people have delivered very big babies vaginally in the past. she is worried if we let him keep growing in there, there will be a higher chance of my labor ending in a c-section.

Re: What would you do (poll)

  • Do you know what she is basing her estimation of size on?  Is it just your belly measurement, or have they done an u/s to determine the weight?

  • I think I would be just as confused on what to do. I think it comes down to going with your gut. You would *think* that with that much progress you would be a good candidate for induction and that the pitocin will just kick start things, I guess with that thought I would trust the doctor if it were me. How big is he estimated to be?

  • She is going off the size of my belly and the major change in the last 2 weeks. I know they can be wrong by a pound or two but I just don't know because I would hate to not get induced and end up with a c-section thinking I should have listened, but then again, I would hate to be induced and have a routine vaginal delivery when my body is ready.

  • My only concern with letting nature taking it's course would be laboring for several hours only to have him be too big and end up needing a c-section.  If I were going to have a c-section either way, I would hate to have to go through intense labor first.  Whereas, if they induced, you might be able to avoid that whole scenario.
  • I voted to wait. But, I think it's such a hard choice. It seems like doctors are wrong about size a lot (I had 2 friends who were induced because their drs felt the babies were big, and they both had 6-7 lb babies). I think if I were going to be induced, I would at least want an u/s to estimate the weight, or I would at least want to give my body until my due date. Do you have the option of starting with cervadil to see if that gets things going before going to the pitocin? I know that I would be as stressed out trying to make this decision as you are. I'm sure things will go great with whichever decision you make!
  • She didn't suggest Cervadil because it's used to ripen and thin the cerix. Mine is plenty thin and ripe, just not having the contractions yet. Going to make DH have some sexy time tonight and maybe the baby will come on his own today/tonight

I guess that's true--you're good to go in that department. Hopefully sexy time will get something going so you don't have to make the decision!!!
  • hopefully! I just hate that this is something I have to make a decision about! This is something that I shouldn't have a choice when it happens!

  • If it were me, I'd go for the induction.  Inductions when you're progressed as far as you are, are usually successful.  If you're unable to birth vaginally, whether induced or not, you're still going to wind up with the same result - a c/s.

I'm pretty sure those of us who've wound up in sections are pretty ok with it.  I know I am - recovery was easy for me, and besides a sick itch in my nose during the section, I have no complaints.

Again, I'd go for the induction.  You never know what'll happen during labor anyway - you might need the pitocin to just kick start the contractions and your body might take over from there.

  • I think I would go with the induction.  It seems like you are ready, just need an extra push.  I think since you're 4cm already, an induction will be successful.

And just to give you a successful/happy induction story - my friend was 3cm for 3 weeks.  Finally, her doc said they will induce her.  They gave her the smallest dose of pitocin, contactions started almost immediately, and she only labored for 5 hours and pushed for 30 minutes.

This is what I think is going to happen with you, Jennifer.  I think you just need that extra push.

And don't worry about the size of your hips - look at Ashley.  She's small and she just gave birth to an almost 11-lber!

Hopefully your body would respond like that to just a little push since you're so far progressed!

  • Thanks so much ladies! I wish there was a way they could just give  me a little pitocin and send me on my way to come back when i'm fully in active labor. i just hate the idea of having to be hooked up to all the machines, iv, pitocin, etc. from the get-go since I wanted things to be as natural as possible. but...I am SO ready to meet my son!

This exactly!  I just think your LO needs the extra push!

  • It's just crazy that 4 weeks ago I had to get a shot of that stuff to stop contractions, and now when I need them, they won't come! I am going for a nice long walk (supposed to be almost 90 in seattle today!) and see if we can't get some progress today. Maybe this is a sign that my son is lazy like his daddy! haha.
  • I suggest to go w/ whatever your doctor suggests. I'm assuming that you are not the 1st patient (s)he's had, so in addition to the 8+ years of school observation, and however long they have been in practice, they probably know what's best. I think it's hard for a lot of us first time mom's to lay our trust 100% on someone else when our body and our baby are on the line. But ultimately the decision by your doctor takes into account what is best fot you and your baby.

  • If it were me I'd do the induction in part because of my family history.   Both my mom and my aunt (her sister) had to have pitocin to advance their labors and I think were in a similar situation as you.  My aunt had two boys and needed to be induced for both.  My mom only had me so there's no second pregnancy to compare to.  The hip issue you mentioned would worry me a bit I have to say if you waited much longer.

You've obviously talked about the pros and cons of the induction with your doc which is exactly what you should do.  Try to relax and make your decision from that.  Trust your gut instinct if you have one in this situation.  If you decide to induce tomorrow, do your best to get a good nights sleep, relax as much as possible, and enjoy your time with DH since you know how crazy Thursday will be (meaning normal labors can be a bit crazy).

    Hugs, vibes, & GL!

This. A long painful labour that ends in a c section is exhausting. I'd get on to those tried and true methods and schedule an induction if they fail.

  • I understand the confusion you have. My Dr offered to induce me when I was 39 weeks and 2 days and I said I would rather be induced if I have to once I pass my due date. So when my due date came and went I was finally induced at 40 weeks and 5 days. I was 2cm and 80% effaced, but I had been that way for 2 weeks already...

DH and I wanted to let the nature do it's course up until the due date, and we decided that if after the due date if the baby did not come, than we would help her along, and for us we felt comfortable with that decision.....

No matter what you decide to do, your LO will be here soon, and the goal is for a healthy baby and an easy delivery for Mommy.... Good Luck with your decision!!

  • But for what it is worth, even with the induction I had a very successful delivery, and I only pushed for 19 minutes :) 9 pushes and she was out!!
  • My question would be, how is your health otherwise ... your BP and such? Is everything else really good or are there other areas of concern besides just baby size/ hip size ratio?

I one who leans towards waiting, becasue I think an induction can go either way as far as leading to a C-section.

  • My best advice would be to try to listen to your body.  My best friend was pressuring me to take castor oil, and while that is not exactly the same, I finally had to tell her to back off because I didn't think the baby and my body were ready.  I switched from my OB to the midwife was because I did not want to be induced, but of course there was no concern about her being very large.  I think that if I were in your position I would want to hold off until next week, especially since your body seems to be gearing up already, but of course I know that is hard to do at this point!
