Potty Training

Is this a good start?

Bryce, 22 months, peed in the potty after about 10 minutes of sitting on it.  He wore underwear for 2 1/2 hours without an accident.  It was bed time so we put him back on the potty one last time and then in a diaper.

We frequently asked him if he needed to potty and he shook his head no.  We placed him on the potty a few times just to be sure.

Today is the first day we have actively tried potty training.

Is this a good start or is it too early to tell?

  • I would say it is a good start.  How come you put himback in a diaper for bedtime.  You might want to up training pants for bed so he doesn't get confused.  Keep up the good work.

  • I would say its a good start! With DD we started doing that for a few weeks (but started younger) then progressed to putting her on the potty every so often (every 30 minutes). I wouldnt ask though, put it more like "It's potty time! Lets go try to go pee-pee or poop!". Giving a choice could be confusing because LO might not want to stop what they're doing to go and may tell you no. Then even if LO doesnt go, still praise them for a "good try!"

  • That's pretty much how we did it.  And I kept him in diapers overnight too, still do actually.  I agree with the pp that every hour or so just take him potty, and don't ask him, because he will ALWAYS say no :)  And let him sit for awhile when you take him until he gets used to being able to go right away.  It took DS awhile to learn that, so we sat and read books, for up to 15 minutes at a time.  Now he'll go immediately, but they have to learn to release their muscles like that.
