Changing bedtimes - is it possible?

I wish I had asked the doctor this last week but I didn't, so I thought I would see if any of you have had done this.

Caroline goes to bed waaaay early each night- like between 6 and 7.  Which in a lot of ways is good, but sucks sometimes.  Partly because Jeremy doesn't get home until 6:30 so he doesn't get to see her for very long and we rarely eat dinner with her.  I usually just sit with her while she eats.  It also puts quite a damper on any sort of evening activity.  I know this is very selfish, but it would be nice to be able to take her out a bit in the evenings.

So, I've been thinking about trying to bump her bedtime to around 8.  Has anyone done anything like this?

Oh, and the reason she goes to bed so early is because she is seriously ready.  She's always so exhausted shortly after dinner.

  • Can you move it back 15-20 mins each night? Until you get to the time you want?

    I have no idea though.

  • I've heard about moving it in small increments, but I'm kind of scared to try it.  Maybe now is the time though.
  • What time does she wake?  How many naps a day does she take?

Kash sleeps from 8-6 (although he has gone back to waking twice a night...grrrr!) give or take.  I can keep him up later because he takes a morning nap and an afternoon nap.

  • Yes, you can do this.

Just try to ease her into this. You can start by getting C bathed and ready and then take stroller walks around the neighbourhood together.  This way, if she falls asleep you just move her from stroller to crib, throw in a story and bottle if she wakes and voila! Success.

She usually wakes up around 7:30 or so with only 1 good nap a day.

    We'll give this a try.

  • I understand this.  Rowen used to go to bed at 7 when I was working because I had to get him up so early in the morning.  Now he goes to his room at 8 but doesn't go to bed until 9.  It works for us because then he sleeps in until 9 and its much easier right now for me.  I'm going to have to start slowly switching him back now so he's ready to start school the end of August.  I usually just move it back 15 mins or so every few nights and after a little while he has always gotten used to it.  If she is really tired I would agree that a walk would be wonderful.  I used to do that when Rowen was little because it helped keep him calm but there was still so much to look at that it usually kept him awake.  Good luck!
