Nursing Location Question

Hi guys,

I have a 4 week old and I am nursing her.  We have been busy together and have enjoyed going out shopping etc..  but with her demanding nursing schedule this has of course posed some challenges on locations to nurse.

I have been nursing in the back seat of my car and if I get caught at Target in the change rooms. I am interested to hear other's experiences of good places or ideas to nurse while out in public. What worked for you?

Thanks!

Re: Nursing Location Question

  • I just found a place to sit. I never went out of my way to go to the car or a dressing room. I was never harassed for it.

When K was a little bigger, I could nurse her in the ergo, and I could walk around while nursing, and no one could see anything.

Legally, you are allowed to breastfeed anywhere you are otherwise allowed to be.

  • Stores that cater to moms and babies usually have nursing rooms. So if you are going to a mall, check if there is a Carter's or Motherhood or Babies R Us around.
  • If you are ever at the EP Center Von Maur has a really nice women's lounge.

  • Like Go4 said, you are legally allowed to nurse wherever you would like to.

Some places are hard, like Target because there is just no place to sit.  I wish I would have invested in a sling or a carrier that gave me more freedom to nurse while carrying DS.

Some malls have great nursing rooms.

A lot of times, if I was in a store with a furniture section, I would just sit down in a chair or on a couch.

But DS was a really distracted nurser.  So sometimes I would just end up sitting in the back of my car.

  • I laugh at the "we have been busy together and have enjoyed going out shopping etc" because it's *YOU* who is having fun... YAY for that. Seriously.  But your baby wants nothing but to eat, sleep, poop and be held.  :-)

I've nursed everywhere but rarely the car.  But while I did travel alone with my son at age 5 weeks and then 3 more times by 4 months of age, our normal every day life was very chill.  He napped every 2 hours as do babies that age, so it wasn't super fun to try to go places.  Or I'd hang with gf's and babes would eat, sleep and poo while we chatted.  Maybe we were also cihll because he refused the sling and refused to sleep anywhere (or be laid down anywhere) til he was five months or so.  It was cosleeping or his swing with loud vaccum sound cd....

Pretty much anywhere that has a seat, go for it!  And try to "plan ahead" so you run out to an errand just after nursing and get back for the next nursing/nap session.
