f/u: manual version - FAIL (long)

So, after much thought and consideration yesterday, MH and I decided to try the version today.  They had a spot at the hospital early this morning, and MH had off work already today, so it worked out well.  We called my doctor back and scheduled it for first thing this morning.  We could have waited until next week, but a lot of studies show that the 37th week is the most successful time to try, and we figured why not give it a try?  The worse-case scenario is that is jump-starts labor (and that a very small risk), and we're full-term now anyway, so why not?

We arrived at the hospital at 5:30am, and both doctors arrived at about 7:00am.  I was given two drugs: one that relaxes your uterus (I forget the name), but it makes your heart race, and another to relax me.  Well, first of all, I hated the first drug.  I hate heart palpitations, and it was an awful feeling.  But MH was there, so I held his hand, and it was okay.

Then the manipulation started.  I had two OBs...one on each side of me.  One was pulling, and one was pushing.  And it was AWFUL!  The nurse kept trying to encourage me to breathe deeply, but with the pain and the heart racing, it was difficult to calm myself down.  They pushed and pulled for what was probably 2-3 minutes, then took a break.  Then it repeated.  I was just about to tell them they needed to stop when they did anyway, and my doctor said they wanted to try one more time (from what I read, they only try 3 times), turning him a different way.  Well, that was just as painful, and didn't work, either.  This little guy does not want to move an inch!

So they cleaned me up, and I had to stay for about another 90 minutes on the monitors, to make sure he was okay (btw, he seemed completely unaffected by all this....some jumps in heart rate, which is actually good, but them back to being happy as a clam).  Everything looked good, so we went home.  Slept for another 3 hours at home, then went out for "breakfast" (it was 1:00), as I was starving.  I've spent the rest of the day on the couch.

Overall, I'm glad we tried, even though it didn't work.  I'm a very proactive kind of person, and I don't wait well.  I like to know that I've tried everything possible to solve a problem.  That said, now the plan is to try a session or two of acupuncture and some positioning on my own.  But if he stays this way (which I have a feeling he will), we are scheduled for a c-section on the 22nd....a little more than 2 weeks from now.  I didn't want to schedule it earlier than that, to give him time to move, but that's only 3 days before EDD, so if he hasn't moved my then, I say let's do it.  I'm kind of sad, as I didn't expect this at all....but who does, I guess?  As scared as I am of pain, and wanted an epi anyway, I did want to experience the whole thing of starting contractions, timing them, possible water breaking, etc.  And as much of a planner as I am, there's something exciting about the uncertainty of not knowing when labor will start.  I feel like I'm going to miss out on all that.  Of course, who knows, that all may happen earlier than the 22nd anyway, but I'm doubtful.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me vent and tell my little story.  Please send "head down" vibes!  And any advice for preparing for a c-section, either mentally, emotionally, or physically will be much appreciated.

  • I'm sorry it was painful and that Little man didn't want to move. Ashton was breech as well and he finally turned sometime between 39 weeks and the day I delivered (39 weeks 4 days)...but he was sunny side up and I still ended up with a c-section.

Give him some more time. I did a lot of exercises (like the ones Lori mentioned in your below post) that I think helped.

  • awww i'm sorry it didn't work but at least you tried.  i'm sending tons of head down vibes your way

as far as getting ready for the c/s i wouldn't worry about it... my biggest advice is to take the pain meds early and often (as often as they say it is ok) so that you can get up and moving. the more you move about the quicker you'll heal and regain mobility.

  • oh bummer that the version didn't work, but like you said, you've got 2 more weeks.  Your baby could move so much b/t now & then.  Try the exercises & the accupuncture and if they don't work, you know you've done all you can.  Plus a c-section is just the means to an end...when the time comes you will be so ready to meet your baby boy, you won't care how it has to happen.

BUT with all that said...lots of "head down" vibes to you & baby boy!!

  • I'm sorry it didn't work.  :(

Sending you lots of head down vibes!

  • I'm sorry it didn't work also. I was cringing for you when you were describing what they did.

I have a good feeling re. your bebeh turning into the right position in time for his arrival. Still sending 'head down' vibes for ya anyway.

  • Ouch! Sending you plenty "head down" vibes!!

I agree with all of what Jaime said. If you end up with a c-section definitely take your meds and get moving! I didn't move around as much the first & second day and still wonder if that would have made a difference in my recovery. Good luck! Hopefully your little gets the message and decides to move on his own.
