  • Books by Eric Carl, Sandra Boynton, Dr. Seuss, Shell Silverstein, etc.

Also read a lot of Pat the Bunny, and simple cute books w/ just pictures, or one word per page, etc at first.  Peek-a-boo books are fun too.

  • If you haven't had a shower yet... for my shower we asked people to bring a book for the baby instead of a card.  Then they wrote a special message on the inside of the book to the baby.  I have so many books for DD for all ages up to to 3 or 4 years old, I have only bought her one book so far.

  • Disney stories like Little Mermaid & Cinderella

Corduroy- One of my favorite books growing up

    The very hungry caterpillar

I have a large collection of books already for her. I love to read so I'd like to pass that on. I work at a hospital and every couple months they have a Books are Fun sale- I never walk out empty handed. I got 10 disney story books for $12 last time. I also got 12 berenstain bears books for $12.

  • My baby has a huge library already lol my brother and I still have our giant collections from when we were young. During my pregnancy I've been reading Dr Suess' "Oh Baby The Places You'll Go" (a book meant to be read in utero) and Robert Munsch's "I Love You Forever." Both of those authors collections are must-haves! We also enjoyed the Berenstein Bear collections later on, and Beatrix Potter, just to name a few.

    I love this idea!

  • My hostesses have already included something like this on the shower invite, though I do love the classics. (Dr. Suess books, Shel Silverstein, etc.)

  • More Sandra Boynton books. I think those are universally appealing to babies. She has a great sense of rhyme and rhythm. Also, probably a couple more books with actual baby faces in them. Babies are captivated by those.

I definitely agree.  And books w/ pictures (real and drawings) of animals.  Those were definitely some of the favorites of the baby stage.

  • These are DD's favorite books so far:

    Good Night Gorilla (awesome)

    Moo Baa La La La

    Big Red Barn (love it)

Diaper David--she's ready for toddler David now but these are great books.

Tails--can't remember author offhand but it's a GREAT book with things to touch, feel, pull, etc. We also have the alphabet one, which is also good, but she prefers Tails.

At this age, she actually really likes the books that just have lots of pictures of things with the words as labels--the learning words books

    Hop on Pop

Paddington Bear (it's the one longer book that she really likes so far. I paraphrase the story)

Anything with Sesame Street characters, especially Elmo

When she was really little I read her the Little Bear stories by Maurice Sendak, and those are really sweet. She will like them again when she is older but they don't have colorful pictures.

Definitely also get a few touch and feel books--whatever looks good.

Get board books. Babies/toddlers like to turn pages, try to rip pages, and chew on books. :)

  • My son has an insane amount of books thanks to my SIL unloading her kids' old books on us. I've been reading to him since he was born and he loves books, and I think it contributes to his amazing vocabulary and his overall verbal skills. Some of our favorites are: Goodnight Moon (great for labeling), all Leslie Patricelli books (Yummy/Yucky, Big/Little, etc.), Eric Carle books, Animalia (visually stunning), and the Giving Tree, which makes me sob like a baby each time.
  • Besides the great books already mentioned, I will be buying "Love You Forever" and "Roll Over" they were books I was read and were my favorites when I was little and I can't wait to share that with my LO. I loved it when my Grandma would read to me... I can still hear her voice in my head as she sang the little song from the book "Roll Over". Smile

  • I'm trying to build up the entire Dr Seuss collection, and will likely build up a Robert Munsch collection as well since both these were my favorites as a child.  My mom has also saved a lot of my books from when I was a child, so I'll have a small library started ahead of time.

  • I'm a teacher and I looooooooooooooooooove Mo Willems. He writes the Pigeon books (Don't let the pigeon drive the bus) and the Elephant and Piggie books They crack me up and have great but subtle messages.

I *might* have picked up 5 of them at B&N the other day when they were buy one get one half off....

  • My mother is a retired elementary school librarian, so I'm sure I'll get lots of books from her :)

Personally, I want anything illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman, if I can find them. I grew up with her books, but they perished in a flood. She illustrated a lot of beautiful fairy tales.

We will also get bilingual/Spanish books because getting MH to speak Spanish at home is like pulling teeth (his family is from Guatemala). I'd like to be fluent (I can speak at a naughty kindergartner's level) and I would like my children to learn, as well.
