How horrible is it? I'm thinking about flying to my hometown in a month, and I'm thinking about taking LO by myself. Every time I think about it I have a panic attack. I'm not really worried about lugging him through the airport or anything, I'm really just worried about if his ears can't/don't pop and he screams the whole flight cause they hurt or something. Or what if he gets super fussy and I can't walk around with him?
And what do I do about bringing my pump with me...I feel like I've read on here that people carry it on? Can I put it in my suitcase? Or is that not allowed?
Re: Flying alone with a 6 month old?
You will do fine!
Give him a bottle at takeoff and landing, or a paci. My son just took a paci and was fine.
Bring treats. He can probably have those puffs or something, can't he?
I packed my pump. I brought a hand held in my carry-on in case of an emergency- like a long delay or something.
I flew with DD when she was 6mo old. I had my mom w/ me, so I had an extra hand, which was helpful considering we flew 6hrs one way and almost 11hrs the way back! But the issues you raise were not a problem. She didn't have any problems with her ears, but I nursed her as often as she wanted. She slept on and off. I walked her around when the aisles were free and hung out in the back service area when she needed a change of scenery.
I took my pump as my personal carry-on item. I didn't want to pack it because it took up too much space in my suitcase.

I just flew across the country with my LO last week. (He will be six months in a few days.) It went soooo well! I was really nervous about it but he did great. I sat towards the back of the plane (near the wing) and the white noise (along with a bottle) put him right to sleep. His ears never bothered him. On take offs and landings he always had a bottle or a paci.
I also brought along lots of new toys for him. So everytime he got a little restless, I just brought out something new. I held him and bounced him a lot as well. Also, I bought him his own seat so I could sit him in his carseat for napping and to be able to set him down to make his bottles.
I just wrote a blog entry about my flight experience. Link is in siggy...just scroll down a little. Good luck, I promise it will go better than you think it will!
