Going out to the movies?

I got a free movie ticket that expires next week and I'd really like to use it. Have any of you taken your LOs to a movie theater? We were thinking that if we did it, we'd try catching the earliest showing (10am) on maybe a Mon/Tues/Wed when it would be least busy, and watching a kids' movie (Toy Story 3) so absolute silence from the audience isn't expected anyway. Good/OK idea or no?

Re: Going out to the movies?

  • I took Jack to see "Babies"  he mostly just slept in the sling and I got up the second he started to fuss.  I was also worried about how loud typical theaters are, but it wasn't an issue because went to a smaller "art house" type theater.

I probably wouldn't do it anymore because he is just too alert and probably wouldn't sleep.  Although if it was an early kids show and I thought he would just babble or something I might consider it - I would just try to sit by the door in case I needed to exit  :)

Good pt about sitting next to the door--I was thinking about sitting at the back at first, so that we can pace him around without blocking anyone, but door is better =)

Was thinking about it some more and maybe we should watch an adult movie on a weekday morning and a kid's movie at midnight since it's summer (which means morning showing will probably have a good amount of kids)? It would be better if we were the only ones in the theater =) We were also thinking Toy Story 3 because it's been out for almost a month and we figured a movie that's been out longer will have less people...

  • i haven't been but your post reminded me that Regal cinemas has free kids' movies all summer...i think Tues at 10am they do a different showing. if you go to their website there should be info about it and if you can't find it, it was posted on the baby bargains msg board :)

i would go and just expect that if LO fusses/cries that you'll miss part of the movie while you go outside to calm him down. or i'd time it so you are nursing during the movie and maybe he will just sleep afterwards?

  • Go. Some movie theaters have a mom's matinee, usually the first show on a Tues or Wed, where babies are welcome. They advertise that the sound is not as loud and that there are changing stations. WELL.

I went to one of the so-called mom matinee's with a mom friend and our babies. It was just a regular matinee! Nothing special! And it was LOUD! You don't realize how loud a move is... She had to go ask the manager to turn the volumn down. Since it was supposed to be a mom matinee for babies, she argued that they advertised that the sound would be lower and they turned it down. Alexa slept or nursed during most of the movie. I did have to leave once to change her. I think she was about 4-5 months when we went. Haven't been to another movie with her tho.

I say go and enjoy! A movie during the week will be mostly empty! You can always put your LO in a carrier and no one will know. We had our strollers and everything! LOL.

  • We took Ashton to a mild movie (where we knew there would not be car chases, shooting, etc.) and he slept though all of it except the last 10 minutes. I just held him though.  We went to a later movie (8ish) since that is his bed time and he should be asleep anyway...we made sure he was asleep before we purchased the tickets.

  • We've gone twice and both times I nursed her and them she slept in her carseat in the snap n go. We sat in the front where there is room for wheelchairs so we could just keep the stroller next to us. I had to get up once to push her around a little but she did fine for the most part. We did go to matinees of older movies so it wouldn't be crowded.

This is probably what I would do. I would go on a matinee, on a weekday for movies that are old (or have been out for a couple of weeks) so it won't be crowded.
