Refusing Solids?

We've been having trouble getting Ella to eat for the past 4-5 days. Before this, she did wonderful with her solids (we were up to rice cereal/oatmeal, banana, avocado, sweet potato) and I was usually making more to give her since she always wanted more. The past 4-5 days, she has been nursing the same (5-6x per day) but it has been a struggle to get even a few bites into her. Yesterday she only had banana and today I just about managed to get one serving of rice cereal in. And she doesn't seem to be nursing more to make up the difference. Normally she would eat two servings of rice cereal/oatmeal, 1-2 servings of banana, and one serving of avocado and/or sweet potato in one day in addition to nursing.

I think she is feeling fine. Yesterday she seemed more tired than normal, but other than that she has been her happy self. I did have a weird 12 hour stomach thing yesterday, but she seemed unfazed. Is this normal for them to go through these stages? When she is in her high chair (which we've also been using for a month at least, so nothing new there) she is entirely engrossed by the straps and just about anything else. But, its always been this way and she would still eat.

I'm just concerned. The doctor warned that she'd probably drop off at her 9 month appt. in her weight % due to her activity (she is crawling/pulling self up). We're already only at 5%, so I really don't want to fall off the charts even though they're not worried about her.

Thoughts? A phase or call the doc?  I know the books say to think about what they get over a week versus a day... but so far this week she hasn't gotten much of anything. Thanks!

Re: Refusing Solids?

  • Another thought - could this be a result of teething? I haven't noticed anything coming in and no more chewing of the fingers than normal, but the timing might be right.

  • My guess is teething (though she should also be bothered when she nurses if that is the case) or gas. Maybe she has a bit of what you did but it is only making her bloated and gassy so she feels full with solids. Not sure though, just a guess. Since she is nursing the same I say let it ride until next week since she should still be getting most of her calories from nursing. My daughter always seems to have eating issues, usually she eats too little in general. But she got even worse when she had teething and a stomach bug in one month.
  • Hope things have improved and she's back to her old self.  It's always tough to tell what causes these changes.  It could be she had a bit of a virus, teething, etc.  I know sometimes Ethan would get bored of the same few foods and not want to eat (that still happens since his diet is so limited).  I try to rotate as best as I can but eventually he goes back to eating the old usuals.  I agree that most of her nutrients and calories are still coming from your milk.  Ethan refused all solids until he was over 7 months old.  Also, sometimes a new distraction helped.  I'd change up the toy on his chair and he'd play while I spooned the food in.  Anyway, hope things have gone back to her normal pattern or a new, less worrisome one has emerged.

  • Thanks for your thoughts. It seems like she is back to her old self for the most part and is eating pretty well again. Looks like the week of worrying resulted in just that. Still no teeth, so maybe it was a bit of what I had or boredom. I'm going to cook up apples and carrots tonight, so at least we can add those in over the next week or two for some more variety.
