I have to bring a dessert to an outdoor party/cookout on Sunday. I'm not a big dessert-maker so don't really have any tricks up my sleeve and am looking for ideas.
I keep thinking about that strawberry pretzel dessert, though...
My favorite is Paula Deen's gooey butter cake...see link below. It is so yummy and pretty easy to make. I've done it with yellow cake and butterscotch chips mixed into the filling and also with chocolate cake with toffe chips. both are tasty! There are lots of variations at the bottom.
This probably isn't the greatest cookout dessert recipe (seems heavier and probably wouldn't be great in the heat), but at one this weekend we had some awesome brownie things. She said that she used a brownie mix - made that - and poured it in the pan. Then she made cookie dough (said she used a premade mix for that too) and dropped cookies into the pan (on top of the brownie mix) like you actually would for making cookies. Then bake it. Then make a chocolate ganache to put on top. SO good (and rich!)

this is so delicious - I made it for my brother's birthday last year!
Anyway, my suggestion is some form of s'mores brownies. There are a lot of recipes, they're easy, they're a little fancier than regular brownies and they fit my idea of a summer theme.
Another option would be something like strawberry shortcake since you can mix it altogether right before serving (or have people serve themselves) if you'll be somewhere with a fridge up until it's time to eat it.

I'm a big fan of trifles, especially if you have a trifle bowl or something similar. I make the bisquick strawberry shortcake recipe using my pampered chef cookie scoop, but you could also buy or make an angel food or pound cake and tear it into pieces. Layer w/berries and either cool whip/and or pudding.

OMG, I've made both the gooey butter cake AND that brownie/cookie thing. Both are awesome.
Thanks girls! I'll probably go with one of those. I like to make things that I like so that if it doesn't get eaten, I get leftovers.
Mmmm, pumpkin gooey butter cake is probably my favorite fall treat.
I went to a cookout recently and they made this:

so good!!! I wanted to eat the whole thing.
My coworker makes this every year for our staff retreat and I love it, too. OMG it's so good. And pretty!
