Good Annap OBs

I had planned to switch before I got pregnant but it happened faster than I thought.  I like my current dr but some small things are bothering me, I also like the thought of working with a group of drs I just think they are more responsive or I can get in quicker if need be.

Any recs? Any opinions on people who went with one dr. rather than a group of drs?

TIA!

Re: Good Annap OBs

  • I love my practice, Chesapeake Womens Care.  I know a lot of other nesties use them and like them too.  They have I think around 5 OB's, you meet all of them at your various appointments so you are familiar with whoever is on call when you go into labor.  However, next for our next I am going to also have a midwife or doula (for various reasons, not specifically related to the practice or OB's).

  • I have heard great things about Chesapeak Womens.  I go to Annapolis OBGYN, which has various offices.  I go to the Waugh Chapel office being as I live in Crofton.  I like it but there are a ton of doctors.  I did see the midwife there, whom I did not like at all.  But my MOST FAVORITE DOCTOR of the practice is Dr. Welch.  He is an older guy and very down to earth and funny!  LOVE HIM.  Dr. Ballard is also great there.
  • i went to annapolis ob-gyn for dd and switched to bay area midwifery for ds.   I will write a longer compare contrast of the 2 when i am able to type 2 handed...

Ok- back to update.  Dr. Guckes delivered DD and I really liked him and I liked Dr. Haddock as well.  I saw one midwife during my prenatal visits and she wasn't the greatest.

What didn't thrill me about Annapolis OB-GYN is that when they established my EDD they based it solely on the confirmation u/s and paid no attention to my LMP date.  As a result their EDD and what I thought should be my EDD were almost 2 weeks apart- with theirs being earlier.  Since it was under 2 weeks they told me not to worry about it, and that if I had to be induced they would be sure to give me extra time.  Well of course by the time I am 39.5 weeks pregnant they had forgotten about that and just brushed my concerns aside and followed their policy.  At many of my visits I expressed to the doctors that I wanted to do whatever I could to avoid a c/s and they always gave me lip service that I was healthy, low risk, etc.  Then of course the time comes and they offer me induction dates of 41 wks, 41 wks & 1 day and 41 wks & 4 days - I opted for the 41 wks & 4 days, but was annoyed that they couldn't accommodate me @ my 42 week mark (giving me 3 more days to go into labor on my own.)  Dr. Guckes was very patient with me and let me labor a long time and never suggested a c/s, but I know I came very close to having one and that many docs would have rolled me off before.

Because of that experience I did a lot of research and switched to Bay Area Midwives for my 2nd pregnancy.  I got a lot more time and attention at prenatal visits.  The midwives do most of their deliveries at AAMC, but they also have a 2 birth suite birth center in their office on hospital grounds, which is where I had our DS.  If you deliver with them in the hospital you can get an epidural if you choose to.

  • Thanks for all the info ladies!  I have to learn so much about the different options I have for delivery.

  • I was also with Annapolis OB/Gyn and decided to switch to Special Beginnings around 24 weeks.  I was very pleased with my decision and had a wonderful birth experience.  You can also deliver with them at AAMC if you so chose.  And FWIW I LOVED Dr. Ballard too but there were other doctors in the practice that I was not thrilled with and didn't want to risk them being at my delivery.

Also, although in the beginning of my pregnancy I did not want anything to do with midwives as I thought that doctors would be best and that midwives were "an antiquated thing of the past" this could not be further from the truth.  I actually prefer the midwifery model of care as I feel that it is much more focused on the needs of the pregnant woman and how she is doing both physically and emotionally.  I received so much attention, love and care from the midwives that I did not receive at the OB/Gyn practice.

Ditto this- a great example of this is @ my 6 week postpartum check-up after having DD, no one @ Annapolis OB-GYN even looked at her (I brought her in the infant carrier) and I saw a random gynecologist, who had no interest in my baby and tried to discourage me from breast-feeding (because apparently at the age of 31 after having my first and only pregnancy I couldn't be trusted to not get pregnant again unless I was on hormonal BC, which is a no-no when bf'ing.)  When I went to my 2 week & 6 week postpartum visit w/ my midwives they were thrilled to see my son and happy to see my daughter @ my visits throughout my pregnancy.

  • I absolutely love Chesapeake Women's Care!! I haven't had to use them as a OB yet (although I hope very shortly I will :) ) but I have seen a couple different doctors there for different reasons and everyone is alway so nice. When you have questions and leave messages, they call you back right away to help!

  • I use Chesapeake Women's Care as well and for the most part have had a decent experience so far. There are a couple of the doctors there that I haven't been to happy with, one was just plain rude to DH and I, the other made some inappropriate comments to my SIL who uses them as well. Other then that, the office is always clean, the front desk and nursing staff friendly, and the other doctors we've meet have been amazing!

I just wanted to say how incredibly insulting!  I really hope that that particular doctor doesn't continue to dispense such horrible advice!
