How to start the daycare search...

I live in the Corcoran (Rogers/Maple Grove) area and am wondering if anyone has recommendations or suggestions on day care centers and/or in-home for the area.

Moreso than that... where do I start? I tried to Google it - that is useless, it basically comes up with advertisements for the large chain centers in the area.

In homes really don't have websites for the most part. Are there guidelines or resources that I can follow while starting to look at places? I'm tempted to take a day or half day off work and just drive around and go in to places I find for info, but am not sure if that is how you do it. Not for interviews obviously, but just to get contact info...

Re: How to start the daycare search...

  • A friend uses the Primrose School in MG and really likes it. There is a search you can do with the licensed home providers (sorry I do not have a link). I did not find that to be very helpful, but I know a lot of people have. We just finished the search too (found a place in Minnetonka/Wayzata). It is stressful because you want to have a safe, nurturing place for your child. GL!

  • I know it can sometimes be scarry, but we found both of our in-home daycares on Craigs List.  It is pretty easy to weed out the so-so ads.  I was just very picky and the ad had to have tons of information before I would consider making contact with the provider.  The only reason we had to switch and have needed a second daycare is due to closing times.  We were always late in picking up so we had to find a place that was open later.  Best of luck!!  It is a stressful search so keep your head up!

  • Thanks! I will check on there for sure.

Such a daunting task it seems!

  • Here's a good link to do a search within your neighborhood...

National Association for the Education of Young Children

  • Call your county and ask for Child care resource and referral. They will give you a list of everyone that is licensed around your area. We had a horrible experience interviewing someone from craigslist. Some people may have gotten lucky looking that route, but I wouldnt recommend it!!!
  • Looks like you are in Hennepin county. Here is the number for child care licensing in your area 612-348-3883. If that isn't the right number they should be able to help you! Good luck!
  • mnchildcare.org or Craigslist are good places to start.  Of course, you want to interview the provider and also references they give you.

If Hwy 55 and 494 is convenient, Lil Newton's Nest is near there and they are an excellent center with a unique program.  It is worth checking into depending on when you need to start.
