Rockin Green = can't use other detergents?

Just wanted to clarify...

If MIL uses normal detergents in our washer (tide, gain, etc), I can't use Rockin Green, right? Since it sucks until it cleans out the detergent residue?  I'm not about to revamp her whole wash routine - I've already forced her to use plant based liquid softener or vinegar, and she's kind enough to not mind the diaper washing in our shared machine.

Re: Rockin Green = can't use other detergents?

  • Wait, really? So if you use say All free and clear for regular laundry and rockin green for CD's this won't work?

  • I never heard that!  We use Seventh Generation F&C for all of our laundry and Rockin' Green for our dipes.  I haven't had any issues, except some ammonia stink occasionally on the overnight diapers, but it isn't so bad that I've had to strip just yet.  I'm interested to hear others responses!

  • I hadn't heard that. I think that's true for Charlie's soap...

  • The "how to" booklet from GMD said that too in regards to all the low-residue/clean-rinsing soaps, but when I asked here no one had heard that and people mostly said they continued to use their regular detergent for their clothes and the RNG or other CD detergent just for the CDs.  I'm still going to use our reg stuff until I encounter a problem.  RNG and the other detergents are too expensive for my everyday use.
  • I have read about this in the care booklet that came with GM and as we use coin laundry so we use 7th gen free and clear. If you want I can get it out and give you the details.  Just e-mail me gadnh at mta dot ca
  • perusing the RNG website I found this:

"Do I need to do anything special if I am switching from another detergent? What about Tide?

If you are switching from a clean rinsing detergent, you may have little to no trouble switching to Rockin' Green. If you are using something like Tide however, you may experience some problems as the built up soap is drawn to the surface of your diapers. Even diapers that appeared to be clean before switching, may suddenly become stinky the first few washes with Rockin' Green. This is totally normal, and will improve with continued use. Some people may even experience rashes and repelling as the old detergent is being flushed out. To speed up the process, try Rockin' an overnight soak with 3 Tbs of Rockin' Green followed by several washes with nothing. Repeat the process until your diapers are fresh smelling again. "

this is what I saw that concerned me. Not really something I wanted to mess with since I have little control over what goes in my machine.

Ya, makes me wonder... I was "trying" Rockin' Green out and then was going to switch to something to use full time for all laundry cuz it's just easier, but I have still been using All Free & Clear on my regular cloths... hmmm.

  • I emailed the owner of Rockin' Green and this isn't actually true. I thought it was what caused a build-up issue on another load, but since then, we've been fine. I do think you might get a load with funk (as it does clean of build-up of old detergent, etc), but if you run it again, you'll be fine.
  • I switch between Rockin' Green and Method or Crunchy Clean with no problems.
  • I interpret that to mean if you are using another detergent on your diapers, you may get some smell as you transition. I don't think it matters if you use a different soap on your other clothes. I wouldn't want to use my MIL's washer though because it is cakes with liquid fabric softener.

This makes more sense. I might try the Hard Rock & see what happens.

lol and EW on the softener buildup! I'm glad my MIL doesn't do that to our machine.

This exactly.  No where does it say that you have to use RockinGreen on all of your clothes.  It just means that the first several loads you may experience some stink because the RockinGreen is focusing on removing the build-up from your diapers.  After the first several washes though the stink should go away and you'll have really clean diapers.

This is what I'm encountering right now as I just made the switch from the bG detergent.

We use Purex hypoallergenic  free and clear on all our clothes.

  • We use tide and rock n green just fine. Actually I stopped using vinegar and oxi clean since we started using the RNG and they are coming out nicer.
