I am going to get so many hateful flames for this, but here is the deal.
My bigger son (at least 10 pounds now) can lift up his head and turn it from one side to another. He loves tummy time, only problem is he falls asleep for tummy time. Not a big deal since I watch him.
Problem:
he now tries to roll over and cries when he sleeps on his back. He gets onto his side then starts crying in frustration.
I
have tried swaddling him and waiting until he is in a deep sleep before
laying him down...nothing. And he doesn't much care for the swaddling. IF he goes to sleep ok, he will still be up
quickly fussing. Today for his nap, I put him on his tummy and he
turned his head to watch his crib aquarium...and slept sooooooo good. His reflux doesn't bother him at all like that.
I
feel like a friggen awful mother because now that I see he likes to
sleep that way (took all of 30 seconds to fall asleep) and I certainly
like getting a few hours of shut eye...I want to do it all the time! I
don't feel my smaller one is anywhere near ready for that but the big
guy is really pushing for it. I have tried flipping him over after he is asleep and he freaks out! I even tried letting him cry it out for a few minutes.
Re: xp: tummy sleeper
i don't think this is at all flame worthy! I think all of us struggle with this - a lot of babies sleep better on their tummys, but since "back is best" we are all beholden to that. from what I get with reflux (DD has it so I have done a bit of research - it doesn't bother her sleeping that much though) some dr.s reco that babies do sleep on their tummys if it is bad reflux - I would talk to your dr.
just for peace of mind lI would call him regardless and the reason I say that is that is what happened with me in a diffferent way. my DD was rolling over and face planting - she is a little older so it wasn't the same, but a quick convo with my dr where he assured me given her abilities to roll both ways, neck strength etc it should be fine. Talking to him gave me peace of mind more than anything.
lastly, I know I am crazy paranoid first time mother, but my mom went out and got me the angel care monitor that you put under the mattress and it will tell you if they stop breathing. Its more for kids with apnea according to the company, but I love having it for DD only again more because it makes me feel safer. that could help you if you want to continue to let him tummy sleep.

Both of mine sleep on their tummy's & at first I freaked out but now I'm calm & relaxed about it. They actually sleep much better on their tummys & they fall right to sleep. Joey does get very frustrated when he's really close to the side of his crib & cannot roll anymore to get to his tummy.
I asked my doctor about this a while back and she said if they can roll to the tummy's by themselves or they have good neck control and can move their head from side to side then they are just fine sleeping on their tummy's just make sure this is absolutely nothing else in the crib w/ them (such as blankes/toys/bumpers).
