Does not get "Designer Diaper Bag"

Ok, so maybe I am just bitter because I could ( and really, would never) never own designer anything, but, really...

The thought of buying a designer diaper bag does not make any sense to me.  My DD's bag got so dirty and disorganized and gross throughout the two year span, no matter how I washed it.  I could not imagine spending so much money on something to tote around my baby's things.

This go round, I am spending a little more on a bag- only because I never bought my first one, lol.  My limit is $30- and that is even stretching it.  I guess I need to be enlightened as to why it is so important to have a diaper bag that matches your purse or has a fancy designer label to it??

Re: Does not get "Designer Diaper Bag"

  • I honestly don't understand it, either. I would never pay $500+ for a bag that is going to hold poopy/vomity clothes and possibly have bottles or baby food spill into it.
  • Loading the player...
  • My top reason...quality. Designer bags use the nicest materials that will last, wash well, wear well, and look nice over time.
  • They're nice, I can definitely see why people like them, but they're not for me.  In fact, SIL wants to buy me a Coach diaper bag but frankly, I just want the basic, black, messenger style bag I registered for.  I just know a Coach bag wouldn't fit our active lifestyle in terms of practicality (and DH wouldn't use it).  The bags are gorgeous, no doubt, but I don't want her to waste her money.

  • Yes I agree completely! If I wanted to splurge and get a designer something it would be a personal purse or a nice coat (if I could afford it that is). Not a diaper bag to get used and abused!

I plan on going to Target or Walmart and getting one there. Cute, functional AND cheap.

  • Why does it matter?  Get what works for you and what you can afford.

Why do you need to be enlightened?

I don't get home birth and would NEVER consider it for myself.  But, I don't need to be enlightened as to why someone else thinks it is the right choice for them.  Same goes for stroller choice, epi or no epi, BR or FF.

It is simply someone else's choice and it isn't mandatory that you understand why they are making that choice.

i don't get it either- and this is coming from someone who has no qualms about spending $300+ on a nice bag.

regardless of what you do, how careful you are- blah blah blah- your diaper bag is going to get dirty.

it will get poop, vomit, spitup, juice, milk- etc etc, on it or in it at some point. period. it's the reality.

so, while i don't see any issues with spending $100-200 on a nice, sturdy diaper bag (one that is EASILY cleaned), dropping $500- 1k on a LV or MB bag is completely insane.

    but to each their own.

  • I think some designer bags are fugly.  I don't want something cheap that will fall apart on me, but I'll spend up to $150 for a bag to find something I like.

  • i would never spend more than 30 on a diaper bag.

i bought a Diaper bag from Marshall's for 15$ on clearance and it is big enough for both DDs' stuff. so i am happy and i didn't need a label to do it.

  • I don't get it either, but to each their own. I'm too much of a tomboy to carry around a Coach diaper bag. DH and I are just going to use our UnderArmour backpacks.

This. Quality is important. Why buy an inexpensive baby bag that is eventually going to fall apart and need to be replaced, when I can buy a quality bag that will last and stay looking nice?

I disagree with this.  Our diaper bag of choice is made by Columbia and our second choice is Jansport.  Both are approximately $50-$75.  I've had my Jansport backpack since freshman year in high school (right around 20 years) and it's outlasted any bag I've ever had, including my designer bag.  DH has had the same experience with his Columbia bag.

Just because something costs $500 doesn't automatically mean it's better quality or will last longer.

    Just sayin'.  :)

Why not? If there is a good reason, why shouldn't I know? For example, a PP referred to quality being a reason.  I wasn't aware there was that much a difference; whose to say I might not change my mind?  There's no point in posting a question without expecting response.

I agree. Designer/Super expensive does not always equal quality(meaning, other, inexpensive items can be just as long lasting and beautiful as those that cost hundreds of dollars). I won't be carrying a diaper bag for more than 3-5 years, if that, so why on earth do I need one to last me 10-15 years? I'm probably one and done, and that is fine by me.

If you can afford a designer bag, and that is what you love and want, great. Don't feel badly if you can't afford it, because there are some great bags out there less than 100 dollars that will be just a durable and beautiful without the designer tag.

  • To each her own I guess.

I will buy whatever bag I end up liking the most whether it's the $200 one or the $30 doesn't matter to me at all.  Whichever feels the most well constructed and has the features that I want and looks good will be the winner.  I definitely lean toward designer stuff in my non-pregnant life but I'm not a label-whore, I just buy what I like and what I know will last a long time but it's mixed with a whole heck of a lot of stuff from Target too.

  • The main reason I am considering spending a bit on a diaper bag is because many of my girlfriends have said the diaper bag essentially becomes your purse- meaning toting around baby, diaper bag and a purse gets old quick and it's sometimes easier to throw your wallet and keys in the diaper bag. This being said, I'd like a nice looking bag to carry.

While the bag I am looking at is only $200, I think if someone was going to spend $500 on a bag that they love and will use more or less every day for 2 years- that's really not bad at all.

  • As long as their budget allows i really don't care what a person gets. Everyone has their personal preferences on what they want to spend a lot of money on when buying baby things.
  • Yea I am with you, I don't get it either. I would get a new purse thats expensive. Infact I have a very nice Coach purse but as for my baby bag, nah! You use it for a couple years & then thats it, they get dirty I am sure & I don't want to be all freaked out if it does get dirty. But I am also not wanting a cheap o bag, I am registering for a $100 diaper bag. But whatever to each is own...but to me its a waste.

  • i want a coach diaper bag. It makes sense becuz ive been carrying a coach purse for years and why should i have to give up the brand i like just becuz im becoming a mom?
  • Quality. And some people can more than afford designer diaper bags.

I got mine at the F&F sale (Kate Spade) and paid $70 or so for it. Who cares what brand I am carrying?

Now, would I personally pay $500 for a diaper bag? No. But I also wouldn't pay $500 for a stroller either. But that is because of where my own personal interests and priorities lie.

  • It's all relative.  I personally don't see $200-300 as being "designer"; that's still cheap.  I have a kate spade diaper bag, and that is not designer to me.  Maybe to some it is and a waste, but that's their opinion.  Heck the diaper backpack my husband is getting as a gift was over $100.  I guess he's getting a "designer" backpack then.  To each his own really.

This! If you have an outlet by your house. Some of those "designer bags" can be cheaper then diaper bags if you time it right.

  • I love my Coach diaper bag. DH even likes it, as it looks more like a black messenger bag than a diaper bag, so he is comfortable using it as well. The quality is excellent, it has all the compartments that I think I will need (1st time mom, so not 100% sure!), and it does match a lot of my handbags.

I have very few things that I splurge on, and bags are one of them. I hate shoes, my clothes are modest, so I figure if I have one vice and its bags then thats okay! DH is fine with it as well, so I don't see what the problem is.

What is the big deal about this anyways? Just wondering why you would ask...to each his own, right?

  • Whatever floats your boat.

Some people have $$$ to spend on a diaper bag, others like yourself don't want to spend a lot on one, we're all different.  I have a Coach diaper bag that I got as a gift and I love it.  I had a $50 Skip Hop and IMO it was a total piece of crap and tossed that thing to the curb after one month of use.  If you're happy with a $30 bag then that's all that counts.  In the end it really doesn't matter what other people use.

All of this.  The diaper bag is essentially going to be my purse.  I have a small makeup size bag that I can fit my keys, phone, and cash in, so I can just drop that in the diaper bag.  I don't understand why people care what others spend their money on.

  • I bought a Coach diaper bag because I have three leather Coach purses I use interchangeably and I love them.  I've put them through hell and they still look great and are holding up quite well.  So yes, I do believe Coach makes a good quality product.

That being said, I bought a Coach diaper bag for the same reason.  It will essentially become my purse that yes, gets tossed around, pooped on, etc, but judging by my purses, I'm sure it will stand up to the wear and tear.  It's not like I bought it to say omg, my babies have a Coach diaper bag.  Look at me.   I like their stuff and I can afford it, so why not?

Then again, I really don't consider Coach to be a high end diaper bag.  Louis Vuitton on the other hand, well that's a different story.  But I sure wouldn't give someone the side eye for having one.  They obviously like nice things and can afford it, so why not?  (If you can't afford it, well then, that's a whole other post.)

I think, in all actuality, it was more of a vent than a question, though I am glad I posted it because I have gotten some very interesting responses.  To each their own, sure.  I am sure people think there are vices I have that are strange.  I just roll my eyes sometimes when people post their pictures of the fancy diaper bag they are wanting and ask others what they think- to me, this is a lot like saying "look what I can buy" or like one poster one morning who asked the question on third tri about how much money everyone would be making once LO was born. Those posts irritate me. I don't see the attraction, but maybe people do and I am genuinely curious as to what it is. If its a better bag, not just priced so, then thats good to know.

This.  For some women it is strollers, for some it is nursery furniture, for some it is bedding, for some it is expensive clothes.  Whatever.  We all have our preferences on what we want to splurge on and what we want to save on.

I have two diaper bags.  A Coach diaper bag for when I am going shopping or church or somewhere that I am dressed up.  An LL Bean messenger tote diaper bag for when I am going to the beach or to a sporting event or something casual (and my DH obviously takes the LL Bean if he is going out with the baby alone).  Both have their function, both are washable, both still look pretty good

  • It may not ONLY be a diaper bag. It could also be her purse during as well as after being a diaper bag. IMO, If I can afford it, I will buy it. The way you feel about the people who can afford the "expensive designer bags" is probably the same way the people who can only afford the $30 bags may feel about the people who buy $100 diaper bags. Do/buy what you like and can afford but don't "side eye" the people who spend more than you would.
  • I got a Coach diaper bag at the outlets on sale for $150. It has a lot of compartments, lots of space & Coach makes quality bags that last. The diaper bag will act as my purse so yes I want to carry something nice & that is my personal style. I wouldn't spend $500 on a bag or a stroller as someone else stated, but if someone else wants to, more power to them.

  • Nothing wrong with a designer bag if you can afford it!  I have one and not once did I get poop on it, it's had minor spills of milk etc but it's in no worse shape than anything else I own.  Diaper bags do require some maintance and if you aren't willing to clean one up, then definitely go cheap.  In some cases quality is an issue and in some not.  I also am a fan of designer jeans... they fit me better.  To each her own...

This exactly.  I got my Coach diaper bag at the outlets and after discounts, it was around $150.  Coach customer service has always gone above and beyond and they have been one of the few brands that stand behind their product.  I don't consider Coach to really be a high end diaper bag either, but I appreciate that the company will stand behind their product and if stitching on the handles come loose or your bag rips, they'll replace and/or fix it for no cost to you (at least I would assume so, as this is their policy with anything bought at their non-outlet stores - this is my first outlet purchase but I don't think their policy is any different).  I appreciate a brand that stands behind their products.

If im going to pretty much give up my purse , for this diaper bag , I want something pretty . Its completly a looks thing and im not embarressed to say it lol .
  • The coach diaper bags are wipeable and it essentially also serves as  your purse that you will carry everywhere.  If you typically enjoy nice purses/bags why should you have to give up that little treat for yourself?  I am getting one because I like the way they look, it will serve as a perfect diaper bag, and my husband wants to buy it for me as a push present.

You're proving the point though. Columbia is a well respected brand name that is known for more quality constructed items. From some of the PP, it seems if you're not going to a box store and getting it on clearance then even spending $50 on a "name brand" bag is ridiculous. Of course everyone has their own taste. Mine leads to bags that are in the $150 range but for me it's worth it to have a quality bag and one that looks good since it will be my everything bag. And also, I want to point out that not all high end bags have logos and brand names sewn all over them. Those are IMO are tacky. It seems PP really think high end diaper bags only come from Coach and Louis Vitton which is also ridiculous. Ultimately, to each their own...who cares what they spend on a diaper bag.
