Although I have heard many old wives tales and strange methods to go about trying to conceive a specific gender, I am wondering if any of you have tried to sway the gender of your baby, if you have had any success, and how you did it?
I have read alot about the male sperm being smaller and faster, but quicker to die off, while the female sperm are bigger and slower and tend to live longer. According to this theory, if you want a girl you should have sex in the 4 or so days preceding ovulation to allow most the males to be eliminated, and if you want a boy you should have sex on the day of and day after you ovulate to allow the males to arrive at the egg first. Has anyone used this method?
Re: TTC a specific gender
I haven't used it, but it is called the Shettles method. I wouldn't go painting the nursery based on it, but it is interesting!
This is a topic that you'll find has a lot of mixed feelings on this board. A lot of us have never been pregnant before. There are some ladies who are trying for their second/third/etc, so they may be able to help you.
For me, I will just be overjoyed to have a baby. I do not care what the gender is.
Most ladies on here have been here for a while and are just trying to TTC for any gender right now.
Me, I am good with either gender!
Married 8 years - Aug 23/08
DD - 6 years old, March 17/11
#2 due July 19th! (It's a boy!)
It's called the Shettles (I think) method. And no we aren't trying it. Mostly because (A) we are happy with any gender (B) it restricts the timing of sex. To me that reduces the chance of pregnancy all together. DH and I will be having sex as often as possible around O time.
I'm sure the accuracy is about 50% as well. GL
Try asking this on 1st Tri, most here haven't had their first baby yet.
No, I didn't try to sway gender with dd. I would have been thrilled with either. While I would prefer to have a girl next (ONLY because if it is a boy, we are done), I will not be doing anything to try for a girl. I'll be happy with what we get!
that's the Shettles method. Based on that, our little girl, should have been a little boy - since I was inseminated the moment I was O'ing.

This. Also watching Nascar, mowing the lawn, drinking beer, grilling, and changing my oil.
For a girl try going to a Celine Dion concert, only wearing pink, taking lots of bubble baths and lighting lots of lavender candles.
MMM, sounds delicious! I bet it is even tastier with a horseradish cream sauce.
I'll take whatever I can get. Plus, I can't imagine 'restriciting' sex. If I want it, I want it.
I don't believe in trying for a specific gender. I would feel blessed either way, once we get pregnant with #2.
This exactly. . .
When I got pg with DS, we BD'd 2 full days before I O'd...and I got a boy. A friend of mine O'd the exact same day I did...and only BD'd on that day...and she got a girl. Although I think that the theory behind the science makes sense and "should" work...ultimately, if you could seriously do just that (use the Shettles method and be guaranteed to get the gender you want), people would be teaching and preaching this (doctors included). I think that just like all other things, medically some things make sense and "should" occur...but more often than naught you hear of the people that it didn't happen for (think people who beat the odds and lived longer than expected after cancer, or people who died earlier than expected with cancer, etc). I think it's interesting, but if you're not prepared to have "the other" gender, then I'd think twice about ever having a baby to begin with...and adopt. I think there are some great things in life that only God has a hand in...and this is one of them. I think both the beginning and the end of life is sacred and left to God to decide and put his touch on it.
That being said...Have at it! And if it works, let us all know.
GL!!!!
We didn't use the method but it is very interesting. However, I'm pretty sure we had sex like five days prior to O and on the day of O when I got pg with DS so, when I was pondering the sex based on Shettles, I wasn't sure which it could be, lol. I'm not really one to try to force things... I want nature to take its own course so I don't mess with that stuff.

Oh we would definitely love whoever we get, no matter what baby's gender. We just would like to try for a boy first and see what happens. We too find it an interesting prospect and would just like to see if it works
No matter what happens I will keep you all in the loop!
It all comes down to Genetics! You have to factor in the X and Y chromosomes. That is what acutally determines gender. Not timing or what you had for dinner
This didn't work for me, all I ended up with was a testicle-less donkey.
LOL! More green tea on the keyboard...
You stole my Celine Dion line!! lol
OP, I think that everyone here is just trying to get pregnant! But like all the other PP have said, try googling "shettles method". We didn't try anything special to get DS, I was happy with either, same goes for this time around!
This!
I cracked up at this! I got the side eye from a co-worker!
There are things involved in Shettles that have nothing to do with the timing of sex. Such as making the vagina hostile to X or Y sperm, such as douching with lemon water and eating acidic foods.
No, I am not doing Shettles, but I read Ingender when I am bored, sue me.
Satisfied with whatever we get, here.

You would love a hermaphrodite baby just as much, trust me. My MOH went to HS with one. Her parents loved her to the ends of the earth.
Mmm...donkey testicles. One of my faves.
Especially good sauteed in a little bit of butter.
I've heard that if you and YH become total pot-heads, you are almost guaranteed a girl. No illegal drug tricks for baby boys that I know of...
