Hawaii Babies

manual version

Well, we just came from our 37 week appointment to discover that this little boy is breech.  :(  My OB recommended that we either schedule a CS for 39 weeks, or do a manual version this week and see if he stays that way.  She also said we could do nothing and see if he turns on his own, but that it was unlikely.

We tentatively scheduled the version for this Thursday, though now after looking at MH's work schedule, we may do it tomorrow already (my OB said that was a possibility if we preferred it......I definitely prefer MH to be there, and it would be much easier tomorrow, if possible).

Have any of you had this done?  Was it painful?  Did it work?  I'm so overwhelmed!

Re: manual version

  • I didn't have it done, and not to scare you, but everyone who has had it done has told me that it hurts A LOT. often times it is not successful and the women end up with a c/s anyway.  that said, i would personally still attempt it if i were in your shoes b/c i would much rather go through the temporary pain of a version (and take some pain meds for one day) than go through a c/s and have to take pain meds for weeks (though keep in mind that some women have a much easier c/s recovery than i did...i also think my recovery was longer overall b/c i was reluctant to take the pain meds at the beginning)

  • Samara turned a lot towards the end of my pregnancy. If I remember correctly, she was transverse at 35 weeks, then head down at 36, then head up at 37 and then back to head down at 38 and she stayed that way.

I never had the ob recommend manual version, he just mentioned that I could be in for a c/s if she hadn't turned head down a week before my due date.

He also said that, if a c/s was needed, they would do an u/s on the DAY OF my scheduled c/s to make sure she hadn't turned again.

A midwife said babies can flip right up to when labour starts.

Moral of the story is, baby can still turn head down.

I, too, have heard that manual versions really hurt and that the baby can still keep on turning anyway. If he wants to flip, he's gonna flip regardless of whether you've just spent 'x' amount of time having a manual version performed on you. Babies are cheeky like that Wink

Knowing that, I would personally opt for letting him turn on his own and save myself some discomfort but I am not you and I am not your OB, hon. Take some time tonight to talk to your husband and listen to your own instinct.

Try not to get stressed, I know it's easier said than done, but he could VERY possibly turn head down for you on his own.

Sending him "head down' vibes for ya!

  • Oh boo!  Good news?  Babies turn during labor, so I'd hold off unless there's another reason to schedule a c-section or induction and see if he'll turn on his own and you go into labor naturally...

Also, check out "belly hanging" on spinning babies...it worked for me...and my BFF...

  • oh yeah...if waiting is an option then i'd wait it out first...is there a reason they want to do it now instead of waiting and then doing it later, like right before the possible c/s??

(i know that during my labor she was sunny side up (but head down) and i was able to lay on my side for a while and flip her....unfortunately, during my labor she turned back to sunny side up.)

  • i remember one of the nesties (can't remember who) had her baby in a breech positions but the baby eventually turned and changed positions?! i personally would wait if there is no rush to deliver soon. aren't there any pelvis exercises you can do? with that said, i was a breech baby and my mom had c/s.
