Elliptical vs walking

Ok so I can't go for a walk around the block.. it's almost 100 degrees here which is just ridiculous considering it's early July.  I've gone to the gym a couple times in the past week to try to get things 'moving' but no signs of action yet.  I would guess that staying inside and going on the elliptical for a couple of miles would have the save impact (if any) as walking would, right?

I did get crampy after going to the gym the past couple times.. do you think I'm just irritating things? or could the pain mean progress?

I'm now officially worried I'm going to go "late". I don't know how you overdue ladies do it! Anyone 39+ weeks still going the gym or doing some mildly rigorous cardio?

Re: Elliptical vs walking

  • It's 100 degrees here too, and it's just way too gross to walk outside for more than a few minutes. I'm going to try to go to the gym today and split my time between the treadmill and elliptical. I'll be going slow though - nothing too rigorous.

  • Id stay inside too!! it is hot here too!! Just make sure you drink lots and take it easy!! no sense being in pain from dehydration!! Hope this brings on labor for you!!!! I will keep my fingers crossed for you!!

  • I use the elliptical a lot. My general guideline is that if I am getting uncomfortable I slow down until it passes. I would think it has much the same impact as taking a walk, especially if you are not looking to get your heart rate up.

I'm still doing the elliptical 3 times a week (same as pre-pregnancy, I'm not a terribly motivated exerciser :)  My heartrate is for sure getting slower weekly as I don't push too hard.  I would say any discomfort you are feeling may be dehydration so ensure you are hydrated enough.

I would guess it would provide the same benefits as walking, if that really does induce labor (I know it helps labor progress, but does it really get it going?).

  • By about 34 wks last time I couldn't do the elliptical because of how it moves your legs.  I'd stick to the treadmill and don't do hills.  I was doing the tread mill until DD#1 was born at 38 wks so I think it did help.  Too bad I'm on bedrest or I'd be at the gym trying to get things moving along (not to have an early baby but to get my body ready for labor).
