How long to use the infant/carrier car seat?

When do you plan to/or did you switch to a convertible car seat? Was there a period of time when you just took LO out of the infant car seat and held baby instead of using it as a carrier all the time? DD is probably around 16 lbs and carrying our infant car seat around is getting to be a PITA. However, I bought the one that you can use up to 30 lbs and I am being stubborn and want to get a lot of use out of it.

  • our conv. seat is going in very soon.....we keep measuring DD because she was 27 " at her 6 month appt. and her carseat is up to 29".  she will be too long before she reaches the weight limit.

  • We switched DD around 7 and a half months...she outgrew it length wise even though she was a ways away from the weight limit.  When she was still in the carrier we started getting her out and leaving it in the car around 5 months unless she was asleep...it was just easier that way rather than lugging it around.
  • We switched over to the convertible car seat back in May... Tooter was a little over 5mos old.

I always carted him around in the infant seat.. which is why I was SO excited when we switched over.  LOL

  • Max is about 1/2 inch away from outgrowing his infant seat--we plan on switching sometime this week.
  • DH has the convertible car seat in his car which leaves me with the infant carrier for now.  H is 24lbs and it definitely is getting heavy.  I just bought a convertible seat for my car (Britax Boulevard in Cowmooflauge- so cute!) and it should be here next week.

DS was 28 inches at his 6 months appt and his seat goes up to 29 inches.  We'll be switching when he turns 8 months (at the end of July) and when I get my bonuse from work to buy a new one!!

  • We switched about a week and a half ago. He just looked really uncomfortable in the infant carrier. He's a big boy!
  • thanks!! i didn't even think about the height being an issue, probably being DD is a shorty. I think I'll keep using the infant seat for awhile but take her in and out as needed.

She's still pretty little so we'll be in the infant seat for a while, but I don't cart her around in it unless she's asleep because she likes to be part of the action, not strapped in that seat.

  • I switched Tucker to a convertible carseat at about 5 months, because his feet were starting to hang over the edge and it was about to break my back. It was kind of a pain at first because he still couldn't sit up on his own, but I just kept the infant carseat in the back of my car. He loves to be in his convertible carseat, but I do suggest getting one of the nap buddy things because it doesn't look very comfortable when they fall asleep.

  • We switched last week. DS still fits in the infant seat, but he seemed uncomfortable on car trips over an hour. The convertible seat appears to be more comfortable for him, so it was a good move for us.

  • We have the Graco Snugride 32...we'll be retiring it by the end of the month.  LO is about 20lbs and I usually leave the car seat in the car and just carry him or put him directly in the cart (at the stores).
  • We just switched to the convertible car seat (holds up to 50lbs) on Saturday! DS is a whopping 19.14 lbs, our infant carrier only goes up to 22lbs, so it was time :-).

I was a bit sad to make the switch..

  • We made the switch on Sunday, DS hadn't outgrown the carrier (he's 18lbs and 27.5 inches long) but Mama's back was starting to hurt carrying the carrier and it was a PTA putting him in the carrier in the car.  It's so much easier putting him in his "big boy" carseat and he loves to look around now.

  • We have the convertible in DH's car and the carrier in my car.  It goes up to 32 lbs, and I have a little peanut.  I prefer the carrier--it's much easier if she falls asleep to just take the whole thing out without waking her.  You can always leave the carrier in the car--it's not like you have to remove it each time.
  • We still use our infant seat.  We have the snugride 32 so she won't grow out of it for awhile even though she is on the bigger side.  I just use it like a convertible unless she's sleeping. I leave it in the car, take her out and put her in the stroller or shopping cart when we get somewhere.

  • Still using it. I  plan to switch to her convertible seat in about a month, so at 8 months.  Shes getting heavy and its hurting my arms to carry.  I do take the carrier out each time becauase i find it more convenient.  She can sit up in the shopping cart but she gets tired after awhile and starts slouching.  ANd with the stroller, she actually prefers being in the carseat because she can see me.
