Mabels Labels. Get the stick on kind for clothes, not the iron on kind for clothes, so much easier.
I don't put them on stuff like socks. It is more of a pain to put it on then that it would be to just buy more socks. Also, I've lost nothing in daycare so far except maybe a couple barrettes. I don't know if our daycare is better than average for that stuff or if I've just been lucky.
We label hardly anything and we label ghetto style. I use a sharpie to write on the silicone sleeve and caps of bottles as well as tags of clothes and blankets. I use masking tape and a sharpie to label whatever food I sent for the day

LO #1 - Took 2 years and 2 IVFs ~ DX - severe MFI mild PCOS homozygous MTHFR (a1298c)
LO #2 - TTC 7 months, surprise spontaneous BFP!
I just used a sharpie to label the blanket, sheets, clothes and bibs (wrote on the tags) and I printed out a page of his name and cut it into strips and just used scotch tape to tape it on the bottles (one has to be on the bottle, the ring and the cap), bowls, spoons and cup.
I'm going to see if I can find any that will stay on better through the wash. I haven't had to replace many yet, but I think they're all about ready to crap out.

Re: daycare labels
I didn't put them on everything. Just bottles.

Our daycare requires that everything is labeled.
