Questions about using my wipes warmer

I received the Prince Lionheart warmies warmer at my shower and started using it the other day with cloth wipes. I made some solution, heated it up, DS loved the warm wipes. However, it seemed ridiculous to leave it plugged in all night. I imagine it uses a lot of power to keep the wipes so warm. (They have this huge light on it just to show that it's on!)

When I went to unplug it, the plug was very hot, so it doesn't seem like something you're supposed to keep plugged in all the time anyway. Well, having a bunch of solution-soaked cloth wipes in a closed box, you can imagine they'd get nasty, especially without the heat feature on. It does have an antimicrobial pillow, but guessing that doesn't help much if it's not plugged in and condensation can form.

So how do I use this thing?? (The instructions were vague.) Do you use distilled water when you make your own solution?

    I don't have one but I wanted to point out that heat actually encourages bacterial growth, that's why we refrigerate food. So they may seem fresher to you, but if something is going to grow, it's more likely than if they were cold. Condensation also increases the likelihood of growth as it tends to go hang out in nooks and crannies you probably can't really clean. Think mildew in the bathroom.

    Just make sure you're using something antimicrobial in your wipe solution. I think there are various oils that accomplish this, but I don't know what they are! Once you can see mold, it's already been there for a few days and you will have been using moldy wipes.

    Bleh, that's what I figured. It's tea tree oil that helps disinfect. Do you think it's safe to use unplugged then or should I avoid that since that's how it makes condensation? 

    Thanks for the feedback. I don't my baby to have a moldy butt!

    I was always worried about mold/mildew with premoistened cloth wipes, so we keep them dry until we are ready to use them and use a squirt bottle to wet them. Camy has never minded room temp wipes, and I'm glad because we can't take a warmer with us every where we go (yes, I know they make car adapter warmers).

    Yeah, that's what I'll probably have to do. Alden doesn't seem to mind the room temp much either, but the warmth is a nice luxury & it would've been nice to use the product as intended. I can still use it to hold the wipes at least. I do not want to keep it plugged in all the time if the plug gets that hot!

    Wow; a car adapter warmer seems over the top!

    I have the same one, two of them actually since we go through so many wipes. I premoisten my wipes in a solution of tap water, California Baby wash, Burt's Bees apricot oil & lavender oil. I keep them plugged in all the time. I've never had an issue in over two years. I actually haven't worried about the energy usage because I assumed it wasn't any worse than anything else we use. I could be way wrong about that though!

    Hmm...  We leave ours plugged in all the time too and we only use water, no wipe solution.  We've never had a problem, but maybe I should get some tea tree oil just in case...

    Ditto Kim. I never had a problem with mine. You go through the wipes so fast that I don't think they have a chance to get mildewed or moldy. I stopped using mine when DD got used to room temp wipes, but she hated having her diaper changed in the beginning, so it really helped. I imagine that if I was using it now, I wouldn't go through the wipes fast enough, so they'd probably start to get gross.
