Nebraska Babies

UNMC v Methodist

I had a pre-conception appointment with an ob-gyn at the Olsen Center at UNMC because I heard she was the best in town, but lately I've been hearing that Methodist is the place to have babies in Omaha. Checked out the new Methodist Women's Center and it's incredible. Don't know what the facility is like at UNMC, but I'm sure it can't compete. Can anybody recommend one or the other? Don't know what criteria I should base my decision on.

Re: UNMC v Methodist

  • I've heard great things about UNMC - thats why I chose it.  They  have been supportive and helpful.  My sister delivered there and was very happy with the services provided.  In addition, they have a wonderful NICU so if your high risk that might be a thought.  I have not been to Methodist because my insurance doesn't support that hospital.

I'm a NICU nurse here, so I appreciate the compliment!!!! I delivered at UNMC & had a great experience....no complaints. The delivery rooms are really nice, & postpartum was just remodeled as well. My vote is definitely for UNMC!

  • I personally have gone 2 methodist twice now. my first pregnancy I lost at about 12 weeks and the doctors and nurses were so helpful and so kind during that hard time for me and they gave me tons of info and offered me counceling services and everything. I am now pregnant again and I am going back to the same doctor, Dr. Somer-Shely, at methodist and now the new facility is open on Dodge and it is soooo nice and clean in there! I really love methodist and I fully recommend them!

  • I used to work at Methodist so I was partial to it when I delivered my son there in 07. I loved the staff, rooms, and services they provided (and the fact that Children's NICU was right there if we needed it also). I know that UNMC has one of the best NICU's around too, as well as Bergan. This pregnancy, however, we will not be delivering at the new Women's Hospital. My OB and her entire practice will not deliver out there for many reasons and I have spoken with her extensively about this. I was very bummed in the beginning but have come to realize that when talking about care and facilities/services available, I feel like I need to go where it is in the best interest of me, my baby, and my family. I know Bergan just remodeled their suites so that is a plus, but on top of that and most important is the fact that they have a very good NICU and if something were to go wrong with me during delivery, they are a full hospital and I could get into surgery right away. Same goes for the Med center. I cannot, however, say that about the new Women's Hospital. And this is coming from my OB remember.

My point is, we are going where we know we will have a great experience and be completely safe if anything were to go wrong. Newness isn't alway best, and usually there are a lot of kinks that need to be worked out which takes years (think Lakeside, and them JUST now getting a decent NICU) when a new hospital opens. And remember, all of this is coming from someone who used to work at Methodist and loved it (i still really like the main hospital).

Good Luck in whichever place you choose.
