Pregnant after a Loss

PW warning, question about mattress/sheet

Sorry for being a PW, but I'm on a mission to figure out the nursery stuff today...

I'm not planning on doing the full sheet set thing with comforter and bumpers.

So do I just need a basic sheet and mattress protector?  It seems like all the pictures of the cribs are filled with so much other stuff.

And just a mattress or is it like a box spring set?

Is there any reason to splurge for a more expensive mattress?

Forgive me for being a clueless mommy on this one... We're not actually setting up the nursery until after the baby is born, so I don't want to go by trial and error on this!

Re: PW warning, question about mattress/sheet

  • As far as the mattress is concerned, it is not a box spring- just a mattress. Also, we are going with a more expensive mattress- mostly because we wanted the highest rated one. MH lost a younger brother to SIDS and we are being sensitive to any preventative steps we can take- even if it's not proven that the mattress can have an effect, we still opted for a firm foam mattress. We figure the baby will spend a lot of time on the mattress and should be comfortable.

And you really don't need all the extra stuff for the crib- a protector, and sheet are really all you need to start out!

  • We had intended to not set anything up until after LO was here, but we caved about 2 weeks before his birth and went ahead and had the furniture delivered. I'm with you, though - I didn't wash anything ahead of time, didn't have baby showers, etc.

I read a great tip on this site - put down the sheet, then put a waterproof crib pad, then another sheet on top, so you have layers. Then if LO wets through one sheet, you can pull off the layer and there's a clean sheet underneath (so you're not changing sheets in the middle of the night). I also put a sheet shaver on the bed, so if LO spits up or something, I can just pull off the sheet saver rather than the whole sheet. Does that make sense?

I think you're fine with just a firm mattress and your sheets. If you want to dress it up a bit but don't want to do the full-out bedding set, you can buy a dust ruffle separately as well.

What mattress did you decide on?  Where did you find ratings?

  • I went off of the information in the Baby Bargains book for the mattress.  They recommended either a firm foam mattress, or a firm coil mattress, but they did say that you don't need to buy the "top of the line" coil mattress.  We went with the coil because our BRU does not stock any foam mattresses, and we wanted to be able to put it on a registry (full of internet challenged people).  We found that a reasonably priced coil mattress (around $100 for a Sealy) had the same amount of coils and seemed similar enough to quality to the $200-300 coil mattresses!

Not sure of the exact coil brand that was recommended in Baby Bargains.  They did recommend a Colgate firm foam mattress.

I too am worried about how many layers should be on the mattress.  I thought I was told that you shouldn't use more than 2 layers?  I'm not sure about this part.  I thought I could use a waterproof mattress pad, and then just change sheets.  Not enough protection?
