I recently switched from breast feeding to formula (we have been supplementing since the hospital and she wasn't getting enough from me - long explanation for transitioning to formula). Anyway, I was wondering how much your 3 week old takes in one sitting? My little girl often drinks 2 ounces at one time, and STILL seems hungry, or wants to eat again in an hour or two. She doesn't spit it up or get fussy afterward. This seems like alot for a newborn, and I was just wondering how much your 3 week olds were eating? Thank you!
Re: Formula Feeding Moms .... Question
At 3 weeks my DS was eating 4 oz every 2-3 hours. Still is.
From my googling, 4 oz is at the high end of normal but not obnoxious. If she's taking the 2 oz fine, you can always try 2 1/2 or 3 and see how she does.
If she's getting hungry every hour, I would increase the amount you're feeding her - LO's Pedi wants her to get "empty" before filling her up. If she's hungry after an hour, she most likely isn't empty.
Also, talk to your Pedi - they may recommend adding a bit of rice cereal to her bottles to help fill her/keep her full.
At 3 weeks, DS ate about 2-3 oz at each feeding so that sounds normal. We usually keep feeding him until he stops, so he's full at each feeding (and doesn't get in the habit of snacking every hour).
(I don't know what your breastfeeding experience was, but I also tried breastfeeding and had to supplement with formula from day one --- eventually I went just to formula for many reasons. I felt really guilty at first and sad that BFing wasn't working out. We're all much happier now though and it's giving me a lot more freedom -- to have DH feed him, to wear what I want, to have a glass of wine, etc.)
