Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Who is holding off introducing purees until after 6 months?

I am not planning on attempting to introduce purees until Matthew is at least 6 months. Maybe even longer...Anyone else?

    6 months for us.

  • Me! I didn't introduce puree's to Libby until she was about 6 1/2 months...I didn't find the need, and she was fine.

Also, the thought of my baby eating big girl food just makes me sad LOL

  • Liam had some but its because we thought he was hungry. It was his reflux Crying Now that his reflux is somewhat better and we are going in to the Dr this week we have decided no solids until he is ready. Our 4 year old had no solids for a year so if it takes him a year so be it.

  • We started solids yesterday with some oatmeal and pureed carrots.  She didn't love it, but she ate it.  She's definitely ready now and I'm glad we waited.

  • We may have to begin cereal prior to 6 months (Jack eats a LOT of formula) but we're going to hold off on any other solids until after 6 months.

We may skip purees completely though. I'm thinking of doing a modified BLW sort of thing.

Ugh, I wish I could wait, but Cadie's eating full 8 oz bottles every 2 1/2 to 3 hours and screaming in between.  The pedi ok'd solids.  She eats a little rice and oatmeal, but that's it.  We tried a taste of green beans and she wanted nothing of it.  So I'm going to try going with the cereal for as long as that lasts us.

    I have such a piggy.

We've been waiting until 6 months, and we're planning on a BLW approach too. We're going to start this week with avocado. It felt like we had all the time in the world and now my baby's almost 6 months... sniff!
  • Waiting 6 months as well....and doing a modified BLW too. Dh is dieing to feed Sam some pureed baby food in the Jars. His faves are the Vanilla Custard and something else....I think Bananas or pears lol! I also have some Oatmeal to start her off but After that I will do more regular food from the table.

  • our pedi OK-ed the solids, and my DH is anxious to start feeding our son 'real food', but i am hesitant. I want to hold off on any solids until 6 m or as close to 6m as possible.

He is EBF, and there is no supply issue, he is gaining weight beautifully, plus he seems to have sensitivity to cow's milk protein in my milk, and perhaps even sensitivity to cow protein in general (he usually has explosive poops and some rashes after i have beef, symptoms clear out within few days after i stop having any beef and anything containing dairy)

With my DD who is 9 years old now, we started with rice cereal at 4 m, followed shortly by fresh fruit (my DH's brilliant idea) but of course BFing was her main source of nutrition until she was at least 1 y old if not longer, she had BF until 2 years, 3 m old.

With my son, i am thinking to start at 6 month with fresh fruit like mango or banana instead of rice cereal and then cereal after that, if he likes it (HappyBellies organic brown rice with DHA and probiotics)

  • We were planning 6 mths. Then last week LO seemed to be starving, especially at the end of the day so I figured we'd start her on purees but then this week she's gone back to normal.

At the end of the day she's pretty dam close to 6mths so I'm not too worried, but I will delay it as long as I can as long as I feel LO is doing ok.

  • We plan to wait, but we also plan to skip purees (and do BLW)
  • I'd like to wait until 6 months but I'm a teacher and he'll be 6 months right before I go back to school. I know that I'll miss a lot of new stuff for him leaving him with someone else for the day and I want to be around him when he's transitioning to solids. So, he's 5+ months right now and seemed very ready (interested in food, putting EVERYTHING in his mouth, sitting up with support etc) so we tried some rice cereal and also a whole banana (that was quite the adventure). We're mostly just playing with stuff so I can enjoy his exploration. We'll figure out a schedule and stuff when I go back to teaching in August.

  • We are waiting until 6 months for sure - perhaps longer.

  • I wanted to wait until 6 months but our pedi had us start on applesauce because my DS was having issues with blood in his poop.  So we just started a few days ago.  I guess he was straining too hard and he was creating a cut in his rectum.  Sorry TMI.
  • We just started with a few teaspoons of rice cereal once in the evening.  Other then that my little one is exclusively breast fed. Last week we started adding in some bananas with his cereal.  He seems to LOVE eating, even if it is just a little.

He might only be 13 pounds, but I think we're going to have a big eater when he grows up :)

  • We are holding off on purees only at this point.  We started cereal last week after getting approval from the pedi.  She advised us that it might help his massive amount of spitting up but didn't want us to put it in the bottles. So, each day we try and if he's not ready, we clean up and try it the next day.

Honestly, the mess at this point is minimal and the mess of his spit ups could mean entire outfit changes for both of us several times a day, so for me it's worth it.  Especially with the small amounts he has been eating, there has been a slight decrease in what comes up and out.  Plus, he's starting to open his mouth for the spoon, so we must be getting there!

  • I'm going to do the same thing with DS #2 as I did with DS #1.  Start with rice cereal at about 5 months and see if he's interested.  Stick with that for a month or so and then start purees at 6 months.  I started with veggies and then went through the fruits, a different one a week.  I also nursed DS #1 until he was 15 months until he gradually weaned himself.

DS #1 is now an excellent eater.  I've always let him get messy and take as long as he wants to eat as well as feed himself or at least try when he was ready for a bit.  I also let him try most everything like brussel sprouts and mushrooms as he got older, non-typical "kids" food.  I think this is one of the best things you can do as your children get older and go beyond purees... not assume that your kids won't eat something because other parents tell you they won't.  Children don't need to eat just pizza and chicken fingers.  Granted there are always the exceptions such as kids who have texture issues, allergies or various health issues related to eating/digestion but that's something different.
