? from 3rd Tri: what does back labor feel like?

Hi Mommies!

Yesterday I was in L&D for dehydration with contractions that resolved after hydration.  I was not dilating, but was 50% effaced.  I'm almost positive that I lost part of my MP when I got home last night.  Last night and today I have had this episodic left sided back pain that was actually so severe last night it brought me to tears.  It hasn't been so bad today.

I thought maybe I was passing a kidney stone, because I was nauseated with it, and it was only on one side.  The pain did get a little better with a heating pad and a massage from DH, which doesn't sound kidney stone-ish to me.

So my ? is: what does back labor feel like?  Is it all across your back, lower back, one-sided?  I'm confused...

Re: ? from 3rd Tri: what does back labor feel like?

  • Back labor was the worst part of my delivery. I had it only on the left side and it shifted between a stabbing pain and a muscle cramp pain. I was convinced that I had a kidney infection because thats what the pain felt like.

  • To be honest - I don't remember exactly.  But the only labor I had was back labor and it was bad enough that my plan of hold off on epidural/natural was out the window once the back labor persisted Surprise

  • For me, it was all across my lower back.  My water broke before any contractions started so I knew once the pain came that that was what it was. I mean, if my water hadn't broken I could have thought it was just a horrible back-ache. But yeah, once it started it was across my entire back and would come and go regularly = back labor contractions.

this!!! It was so bad. It was all along my lower back and hips especially. I was in back labor until  i had to go in for an emergency c-section (so from 9 AM to 930 PM). They had me hooked up to a monitor but couldn't tell I was having any contractions, the nurse wouldn't believe me. So they had to put in an internal monitor that goes up against the baby's head and it turned out my contractions were in the 85 90s on the monitor. The nurse was shocked! My advice for anyone is to trust what your body is telling you.

Shiit!  That is scarily like what I am feeling now.  The pain is pretty constant, only the left side, with definite spikes of severe pain.  Nothing as severe as last night, but it is definitely there.

And my typical goopy discharge (sorry TMI) is MUCH thinner today, very watery, but I'm thinking this is because I have drank about 5x the amount of fluid I was typically drinking, so maybe this is the way its supposed to be and its not my water trickling out?

    Ugh...so confused.

  • mine was kind of like someone breaking my tailbone from the inside. (if that makes sense!) like using a tattoo gun (but a really big one) on the inside of my bones.

  • What you had actually sounds like kidney stones to me.  I had 3 when I was pregnant and a heating pad and massage made it feel better because my stones were stuck in the tubes that go from the kidneys to the bladder and those 2 things helped them move along (I had hydronefrosis... sp?)

Back labor doesn't change / get better with heat or massage.  They may take your mind off of the pain, but it's not going to make the pain GO AWAY.   My back labor contractions started in my abdomen (very strong menstrual cramps), then it would spread out to my sides, then it felt like all the sudden my lower back was being broken in half.  This pain was before my epidural (made it a whole 20 hours without any pain meds), after the epidural I didn't feel anything until I had to push.

  • Mine felt like someone was taking a knife, stabbing me in the rear part of my hips/lower back and twisting it over and over again. Seriously. :(
