Name Confusion

I came across a name in our family tree that we both like for a girl.  But I'm a little concerned that she would spend the rest of her life correcting people when they ask for her name.

 The name is Ember.

First of all, if someone said this name to you, would you think it is a different name?  I'm thinking people would confuse it with 'Amber' when spoken.  Also, what are your general thoughts on the name, like it, don't like it?

I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.

Re: Name Confusion

  • Oh I like it!!! I don't think it will cause much confusion except when people aren't paying much attention to how it's spelled. Do you have any mns picked out yet?

  • I don't think you'll have too much trouble. It is growing in popularity, probably thanks to the City of Ember books/movie. I've heard it several times and I think correcting a pronunciation would be as simple as saying, "no, Ember, with an E." And that would be that.

I have a running list of names we're thinking of so far, some family names some not:

Claire, Lilly, Jewel, Hartley, Lynne, Estelle

Our last name starts with S and is one syllable.

  • NMS. I'm not a fan of Amber at all, this seems too similar. Plus, it's like...ashes in a fire. Not anything I'd really want to name a child after.

  • I like it. I also don't think Ember and Amber sound alike at all.
  • My friend's dog's name is Ember. NMS.

  • I like it! I made the City of Ember connection as well (I'm a teacher), but I don't think most people will. I think most people will get it right the first time, but if people aren't listening close enough they may mistake it for Amber - in which case a simple correction will be all that's needed. Pretty choice!

    This.

  • Wouldn't everyone call her "Fire-starter?"

As in, fan an ember into a flame?

Maybe when she's a teen she can get flame tattoos?

  • I don't think it would be confused with Amber.  Maybe once in a while.  My hangup on Ember is like some of the pps mentioned.  My initial thought is fire or ashes and I don't care for that comparison.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I just made this exact comment in another thread when someone asked about "Ember".

I'd consider it for a MN but not for a first.

  • I think it is a perfectly fine name. I like it better than Amber, and don't see it causing a lot of confusion.

One negative is the fire connection that others mentioned. But that wasn't the first thing I thought of.

  • why is the fire connection negative?  I think of an ember being glowing, smoldering, nothing bad.
  • LOVE the name. After she introduces herself, people will always say, "Amber?" And she'll have to correct them. But it's not because of the name, it's because people are stupid.

My name is Noelle and people ALWAYS call me Nicole. wtf...

    Go with the name!

  • Hate this.  And I think people would get it confused with Amber more than others here do.  Because Ember isn't a name (at least not a common one...this is the first time I've heard of it).  Amber is.  So if she says Ember, people will probably assume she said Amber.

I think this one should be crossed off the list.  I generally don't like nouns as names (especially nouns that are actually things that you can touch...like ember, amber, rain, etc).  They bring to mind a very specific thing, and maybe your daughter doesn't want to be associated with ashes?

  • Yeah, an Ember is something that's burning and Amber is a yellowish brown color, right? NMS either.

  • Thanks for all the input!  I can see its sort of a love it or hate it name!  :)

When associating the name with fire it's kind of like "glass half full or glass half empty."  Either you see fire as something beautiful and warm and comforting, or you see the gray ashes (Ashley, anyone? hehe) and destruction.

Again, thanks for the input, it's good to hear both sides. :)

  • I like Ember, and I actually really like the combo Ember Estelle!

  • Not a fan.  I'm Catholic so it makes me think of Ember Days which are special days of penance and fasting.  I wouldn't want that connotation for my DD.

  • I think it's one of the wolves in Twilight if that doesn't bother you : )

I know an Emberlynn and they call her Emmy. You could also use that nickname for just Ember if she doesn;t like it.

     I agree.  I like it.

  • NMS, it makes me think of ashes.

  • I know a woman named, Ember, and I love it...Amber used to be one of my top names, but I've seen some sites list this as a French form of Amber. I'm not sure if that's true or not though. Regardless, I happen to love this name. When I told the lady this she replied "thanks, my parents were hippies". :)

Which is funny because of all the Ash names that are popular right now...Asher, Ashton, Ashe, Ashley
