TTC after 35

Follie check today & how do you stay focused, but sane?

Well, glad to say my first round of Clomid wasn't so bad. Thanks for all the great info on my ealier question on Clomid - taking it at night definitely helps. I think I had a couple of hot flashes, but then again, it's 110 degrees every day, so it could just be a normal Arizona summer for me LOL.

Had my follicle check today and looks like I've got two that are promising. I go back in 12 days for bloodwork, so hoping for good news.

I have to say, it seems like every week, there's an "assignment" - meds, tests, instructions, etc.It definitley takes a lot of time, effort and thought - all worth it,but still. What do you do to help keep in check with everything else so you don't become so single-minded that you miss out on all the other great things in your life?

It's harder to deal with when I'm not responding well to them. If I'm responding well I get excited for my appointments.  Also, I think it's kind of fascinating how they can tell where my uterus and my ovaries are on the u/s.  Good thing they are professional because it looks like one big grayish black blob to me!

HAHAHA...definitely!!   But seriously, I haven't found a super great distraction for the 2WW...maybe a good book or if you happen to be leaving for a trip...but other than that, I have no useful advice.  sorry...guess that means I'm not doing to well in the 'sane' department.   LOL!

    GL!!

When did you take your last Clomid pill?  Was it for 5 days?  I start taking it for the first time tomorrow.  I'm so excited to start I had planned on taking it in the morning, but wonder now if I should do it later in the day based on what you and others say about it.

I'm actually getting treatment right now through my OB.  She said she would try for 3 months before sending me to the specialist.  She's not having me come in for monitoring though - only if I get to CD35 and have a BFN at home.  I wonder if that is normal practice for OBs?  Everyone else on here talks about the monitoring so much.  I hope I'll be ok not getting that.

Best of luck to you.  :)

  • I strongly urge you to (a) be monitored while taking clomid and (b) run away from this OB and see an RE...as an OB is good with delivering babies and an RE is good at getting you pregnant.

There are sooo many things that could go wrong without proper monitoring while on clomid.  I've heard some really bad stories about cysts rupturing and stuff like that....you should be getting an internal u/s around CD3 to make sure you don't have cysts before starting the clomid; then around CD13 to make sure you have measurable follies.

Please make sure you are being monitored while on clomid!!

  • I took my 5th pill on Monday (took them CD 3-7), and my OB wanted to do a follie check between CD 10-12, then a progesterone test sometime between CD 21-23. Then repeat (or not, hopefully) as needed for the next two cycles.

I'm going through my OB, too. If I don't get pregnant after three cycles on Clomid, she'll refer me to an RE. If you trust your OB, go with what she says now, but certainly ask her about testing for the next round. I think it really depends on each doctor/patient, insurance, other health/TTC issues, how long you've been TTC, previous test results, etc.

My first couple of days on Clomid, I did take in the a.m., but shifted to nightime for the last few days. I really didn't have too many side-effects, but it totally makes sense to take it at night so you hopefully can sleep through them if you do. It is exciting to get started, isn't it. Feel like forward movement!

    Good luck!

ITA - I was so good at keeping focused on my appts prior to my IUI this month but now I just feel like there is nothing to do but count down the days.  I've been trying to schedule lots of social stuff to keep my mind off it. Keeping my fingers crossed for you this month!

Also, I had no response to clomid...I went from O'ing every month, right on schedule to nothing. It also thinned my lining way out and I had significant vision changes. These side effects are common in older women, so I would encourage monitoring to make sure you're not wasting 3 months on nothing.

1 ectopic 3 m/c's prior to 5/05 Un-freaking-explained IF 5/05 IVF, BFN 9/05 FET 3d5e, BFP = Beautiful Baby Girl (lucky pg #5) 8/08 Fet 3d5e, cp 12/08 IVF with PGD, transfer 3, BFN 5/09 FET transfer 4, BFN Hail Mary IUI with Follistim 9/11 BFP; 9/22 confirmed tubal/MTX 4/10 FET 3d5e, BFP!!!! m/c 5/26/10 1 year break and yet another m/c 5/11 FET #5 initial beat 121, second beta 7 Lap and removal of L tube and very mild endo 7/11 Suprise BFP 12/11 & m/c @ 8 wks. After 11 losses and one beautiful miracle our journey is over, we are thankful and at peace.

Yes...thanks MAH...I forgot about clomid thinning the lining!   There's just too many what if's when you're not being monitored.

  • Too funny! I'll see your beer and raise you a glass of wine Big Smile

Agreed - much easier to handle when it's good news. I'm with you - it's all a gray blob to me, too.

  • My OB put me on Clomid too, before referring me to my current RE.  She did not monitor me during my cycles, so all I can really tell is that the lower dosage did nothing for me (no ovulation) and the higher dosage didn't produce a BFP.........I often wonder whether/how it affected my follicle production.  Looking back, I would've liked to be monitored, though I doubt it would've changed the outcome.

Trying not to focus on TTC while your in the middle of TTC is one of the hardest parts of this process.  In the beginning, it was all I could think of, but now, it's a routine and I only get unfocussed at the end of the 2WW.  I have been reading a lot and trying to stay busy with family/friends and getting stuff accomplished around the house, which not only keeps me sane, but makes me feel peaceful about my surroundings.

I wish you the best of luck this month for a BFP!!
